DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for a Conservation Biologist I (working title: “HWI Conservation Technical Guidance Biologist”) for our Wildlife Management Division.
The NC Wildlife Resources Commission’s Wildlife Management Division manages, conserves, enhances, and restores the State’s wildlife populations in a manner assuring a diverse wildlife resource for future generations of North Carolinians. The Division develops and administers programs for the management and wise use of our wildlife resources establishing recommendations for regulated take of certain wildlife species when appropriate. They provide information to assist in resolving human-wildlife interactions when necessary. They monitor the health and status of wildlife and wildlife populations across genera and provide technical guidance to landowners wanting to manage wildlife and wildlife habitats on their lands.
This position serves as a Technical Guidance Biologist in a call center environment in the Wildlife Interactions /Permitting Office of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC). The primary purpose of this position is to receive and handle incoming calls regarding problem wildlife and Human/Wildlife Interaction (HWI) encounters. This position has extensive communication with members of the general public, agency staff and other government agencies. Individual in this position must deliver accurate information regarding wildlife biology and management, animal behavior, problem solving and conflict resolution. This position must interpret and explain divisions and agency policies, procedures, and regulations as well as provide general technical guidance and information to the public. This position is responsible for providing technical guidance and assistance regarding nuisance wildlife and wildlife damage issues. Individual provides guidance regarding wildlife problem situations to the general public including landowners, land managers, corporations, and government agencies. Issues will involve addressing and resolving animal damage situations, human/wildlife interactions, injured, orphaned or captive wildlife that may pose a direct threat to the pubic or to the health of the animal. This position is responsible for evaluating the nature and extend of the problem, providing an explanation of the applicable State and Federal laws and regulations and providing recommendations for alternate solutions to the problem.
A normal Monday-Friday 8am-5pm schedule is associated with this position, though night work, overnight travel and weekend work may be required on occasion. Position will be based out of WRC Headquarters Building location in Raleigh, NC (Wake County).
Considerable knowledge of biological principles and management practices as applied to wildlife or fisheries management.- Knowledge of applicable federal and state fisheries and wildlife laws and regulations.
- Applicant should possess the ability to work in a fast-paced environment capable of handling multiple tasks, with the ability to changes topics and focus quickly.
- Experience in interpreting and analyzing data and be able to write and contribute to written reports.
- Possess strong communication skills (verbal and written) and possess strong customer serviced skills and the ability to speak professionally over the phone.
- Have exceptional attention to detail skills and possess the ability to understand and convey complete rule and status that apply to wildlife management and human wildlife interactions (HWI).
- Knowledge of biological statistics, scientific principles, sampling techniques, GIS technology and computerized data analyses.
- Able to easily adapt to change, be flexible with work assignments and work within the section as assigned.
- Knowledge of the types, habitats, and behavior of a variety of wildlife (aquatic and terrestrial) species.
- Knowledge of wildlife (aquatic and terrestrial) habitats, wildlife and fisheries management, wildlife disease, and species propagation.
- Ability to prepare written technical reports for a variety of audiences.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other biologists, members of the general public, and members of groups interested in wildlife or fisheries management.
- Ability to interpret and analyze data and contribute to written reports.
- Knowledge of the types, habitats, and behavior of a variety of aquatic (freshwater and marine) species.
MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES: Management prefers applicants who have proficiency in communications, skills, both verbally and written as well as applicants who are adept at using Microsoft software platforms such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Experience working in a call center experience is a plus, especially ones that deal with wildlife.
NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Must meet the applicable education, employment, and training standards as required by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Individual must have experience in using Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook. Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.

Salary will be based on budget, education, experience, and equity. This position is a Salary Grade NC14, with a Hiring Range of $47,959 to $59,350.
