Independent Living Advocate/Community Health Worker
Job description
The Independent Living Advocate/Community Health Worker builds relationships in the community to assist people with disabilities to maximize their independence, effect community change and build better relationships with healthcare and other systems that affect the lives of people with disabilities. This position will involve public presentations about independent living topics. People with any disability are strongly encouraged to apply.
Coordinate community outreach, workshops and seminars
Assist people to access community resources
Build trust and promoting encouragement are two of their key objectives
Prioritize a sense of community connectedness as an important asset to the job
Link people to needed health care information and services
Help people access community services specifically to their needs
Build individual and community capacity by increasing health knowledge and self-sufficiency through a range of activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy
Provide peer support when appropriate
Represent NRCIL at forums and public meetings in the community
Collaborate with co-workers to involve consumers in providing direction to NRCIL programs and participating in center advocacy efforts and activities
Assist in identifying community needs and in executing agency goals
Actively promote disability rights and independent living philosophy through all activities conducted within and on behalf of NRCIL
Complete all reporting and record keeping as required.
Work outside of regular office hours when necessary.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $14.20 - $16.00 per hour
