Custom Job Purpose:
This position exists to perform responsible duties for the planning, administration, and management of investigations and inspections throughout the school district to ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards concerning fire and life safety.
Essential Functions of this Job
Inspects all permanent and relocatable buildings to determine compliance with fire, safety, and sanitary conditions. Maintains detailed records of inspections, coordinates a plan for correction of each deficiency, and manages follow ups. Performs fire and safety inspections for child care facilities owned by the School Board. Demonstrates an ability to apply computer proficiency and understanding in accomplishing work-related tasks such as producing detailed inspection reports for board approval and submission to State Fire Marshal. Coordinates inspections with local fire departments, schools, and District maintenance department. Demonstrates an ability to independently prioritize one's own work, negotiate and meet deadlines, and assist other inspectors in planning, coordinating, and monitoring work projects and assignments. Demonstrate an understanding of State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF) in association with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. Performs as the liaison between Environment and Safety Department and the District's employees on procedure and protocol associated with fire safety, casualty safety, and sanitation inspections.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the State Requirements for Educational Facilities (SREF). Demonstrates a level of proficiency in writing, and oral communication to effectively communicate in a variety of situations. Proficient with computer hardware and software. Knowledge of NFPA 101 Life Safety Code sections for Existing Educational Occupancy, Existing Assembly Occupancy, and appropriate existing occupancy sections for ancillary facilities. Bilingual/biliterate preferred.
Education, Experience and/or Certification/License Requirements
Graduation from an accredited high school or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) required. Must have Fire Safety Inspector (I or II) Certification as obtained and maintained through Florida State certified training centers. Experience of 3 to 5 years in industrial safety or construction inspection required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must have a valid, active Florida driver's license.
Work Context:
Requires some sitting and standing, walking and moving about to coordinate work. Requires the use of alternative communication systems, such as electronic mail, telephones and computers. Requires coordination of work tasks to establish priorities, set goals and meet deadlines. Requires face-to-face discussions and contact with individuals and/or teams. Requires work with internal and external contacts, and with the public.
Physical Environment:
Requires working indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Requires walking for the majority of the day, and the ability to lift, carry, move and/or position objects infrequently weighing up to 20 pounds.
