Job description

We are looking for instructors that have wilderness medicine and outdoor guiding experience with the skills to teach wilderness medicine courses and workshops. Prospective instructors need to be great storytellers and hands-on educators that are willing to share their professional experiences and create all-encompassing, engaging learning environments. A huge component of our curriculum is incorporating tools for mental health and inclusivity. We look for instructors who can speak authentically to these topics.

We will accept applications from around the globe but are prioritizing individuals in Colorado that have flexible schedules and availability to teach our most popular courses:

  • Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

  • Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

  • Hybrid Wilderness EMT Upgrade (WEMT)

REQUIREMENTS

  • National Registry EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant, Physical Therapist or Medical Doctor

  • American Heart Association BLS/Healthcare Professional CPR

  • Wilderness Medicine training (WFR/WEMT - DiMM/FAWM preferred)

  • Search and rescue, ski patrol, or mountain rescue experience

  • Outdoor guiding, park ranger or trip leading experience

Responsibilities

  • Instruction: Teaching medical, trauma, and environmental topics to the latest evidence-based guidelines in austere medicine with enthusiasm, creativity, and passion!

  • Leadership: Supporting students' through engaging hands-on learning with a wide range of learning styles, backgrounds, and cultures.

  • Teamwork: Share responsibilities, teaching, and organization with your co-instructor. Continually be a fluid risk manager and empower students to do the same.

  • Administrative: Facilitating testing, collecting student forms, course evaluations, accounting for course equipment and post-course inventory.

  • Growth: Be a perpetual learner, dream about your goals, and let us know if there are ways we can help support you to get there.

Onboarding

The Instructor Training Program is divided in 3 parts:

  • Part 1: Consists of a live video call covering Backcountry Pulse’s teaching philosophy, creative instructional techniques, co-teaching methods, setting students up for success, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training.

  • Part 2: Self-paced with pre-recorded videos, and reading materials of clinical practice guidelines, course curriculum and quizzes.

  • Part 3: Shadow the course you will be teaching, complete a self-evaluation, and start co-teaching courses on the calendar!

Notes on onboarding:

  • We never ask for individuals to pay a fee to become an instructor with us or to take our Instructor Training Program. We are committed to inclusive and equitable onboarding practices and feel requiring prospective instructors to pay to be part of our team creates barriers. Additionally, we compensate for shadow courses at $100/day.

logistics

  • Instructor Compensation: $25/hourly for all in-person courses + any associated travel and lodging expenses:

    • $400: 16-hour Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

    • $500: 20-hour Wilderness First Aid (WFA) + CPR

    • $600: 24-hour Hybrid Wilderness First Responder Recertification (H-WFR-R)

    • $1,250: 50-hour Hybrid Wilderness First Responder (H-WFR)

    • $2,000: 80-hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR)

  • Instructors are onboarded as Independent Contractors which includes a background check and license/certification/employment verification.

  • We have a shared Google calendar for course scheduling. Our teaching requirement is a minimum of 4 courses in any category a year.
