The Investigations Supervisor (In House) will provide support to the Directors of Investigation, and will report directly to the Director of Investigations-Central Operations. Responsibilities include the supervision of investigative staff and their investigations of assigned complaints.
The successful applicant will be able to provide direction to investigative staff in the completion of their assignments in order to ensure complaints are processed in an efficient and effective manner in accordance with state laws, board regulations, and, division and departmental policies and procedures.
This position is also responsible for: 1) investigation of cases; 2) preparation and review of reports, memorandums, and official correspondence; 3) consideration and pursuit of appropriate resolution; 4) collaboration with division staff to achieve efficient resolution of complaints, consistent with the Department of Professional & Occupational Regulation’s (the Department) mission; and 5) identifying, developing and implementing relevant training.
This position is located at the agency’s main office in Henrico County, Virginia; however, occasional overnight statewide travel may be necessary.
The Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR) is an executive branch agency under the Secretary of Labor for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our regulatory boards are comprised of practitioners and citizens appointed by the Governor and are responsible for regulating certain professions and occupations, ranging from architects and contractors to cosmetologists and professional wrestlers. DPOR supports Virginia’s economic vitality by helping qualified people start businesses and work in their chosen fields. We protect the public by verifying minimum competency, investigating complaints, and upholding professional compliance with state law and regulations.

TELEWORK OPTIONS : Please note that this position may be eligible for limited telework and is not a full-time telework position. Upon hire into this position, the agency requires the incumbent to be in the position for 120 days before a specific telework schedule may be submitted for consideration.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to effectively coach, manage, and supervise others
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Possess knowledge of administrative law, investigative practices and principles, regulatory processes, and court systems
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills and proofreading skills
  • Possess excellent organizational skills to include the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to complete investigations as demonstrated by investigative experience or experience in conducting thorough research and applying analytical skills
  • Ability to compare, and appropriately apply, information collected to complex regulations and statutes and recommend appropriate outcomes based upon internal procedures
  • Ability to accurately document findings in accordance with policy and procedure
  • Ability to provide instruction and teach necessary work skills to others that will allow them to effectively perform their job responsibilities
  • Possess commitment to customer service with the ability to effectively and appropriately communicate with the general public, Department staff, and members of other departments and agencies
  • Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office and Adobe products with preference for intradepartmental software programs and databases
  • Ability to perform duties of the position that may require overnight statewide travel as necessary
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, and participate in a driving record monitoring program if employed


Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduation from a college or university with emphasis in Public Administration, Public Policy, Criminal Justice is preferred, or similarly related field and/or equivalent work experience may be considered
  • Ability to effectively collect, comprehend and verify information relevant to the Department’s investigative practices is desirable
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience in a regulatory environment with a variety of disciplines is highly desirable
  • Experience using data management computer programs preferred
