The Utah State Developmental Center is looking for a hard working, reliable person to fill a Journey Maintenance/Construction Specialist position.

Principle Job Duties:

  • Providing a safe and secure environment for the individuals that reside at the Utah State Developmental Center.
  • Installing locks and cores throughout the campus.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of buildings and repairs and installation of appliances.
  • Performing snow removal tasks as assigned.

Ideal Candidate will Possess:
  • Two or more years of paid general maintenance work experience.
  • One or more years of experience working around the intellectually disabled population.
  • One or more years of paid work experience in welding and fabrication.
  • One or more years of paid work experience in appliance repair.

Example of Duties

  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing problems, making adjustments, repairs and/or performing preventative and general maintenance on structures, equipment, machinery and miscellaneous articles to include carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical.
  • Performing tasks inside of occupied apartments such as adjustments to doors and door hardware.
  • Maintaining and/or replacing lock sets, both cylindrical and Mortise type locks.
  • Cutting keys and re-pining figure eight cores as dictated by work order.
  • Operating heavy lift equipment including scissors, fork lifts, and boom swing stage to heights of up to 80 feet.
  • Operating snow removal equipment such as small snow plows, spreaders for ice melt, and snow shovels.
  • Providing installation of residential type appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers.
  • Welding and Fabrication.

Typical Qualifications

  • Ability to complete tasks in a noisy and distracting work environment.
  • Use power tools such as band saws, rip saws, table saws, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of construction.
  • Follow written and/or oral instructions.
  • Use and maintain a variety of hand tools.
  • Maintain and/or repair tools and equipment.
  • Perform a variety of general maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge and skill in hazardous materials handling, application and disposal.
  • Knowledge of wood and metal studs.
  • Self motivated and able to work without continuous supervision.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.

  • In order to work at the Utah State Developmental Center as part of the CMS COVID-19 mandate, you must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or have received at least your first dose of the two shot series and have scheduled the 2nd dose before you start.
  • Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, e.g. being subject to possible physical attack; risks which require the use of special safety precautions, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
  • You must successfully pass a criminal history check.
