As a Kummer Endowed Department Chair, the selected candidate will fulfill the required role of Kummer Endowed Chairs as outlined in https://kummerinstitute.mst.edu . The Kummer Institute was recently established through a $300 million transformative gift that will cultivate leadership and technological innovation, nurture an entrepreneurial mindset, foster expansion of academic-industry partnerships to address the emerging needs of industry, and create economic growth for the region, state, and nation.

The CS department currently has 8 Tenured/Tenure Track (T/TT) faculty (with additional hires in the pipeline), 5 Non-Tenure Track (NTT) Teaching faculty, 5 Adjunct Faculty members, and 3 Joint-Faculty appointments. The department has about 700 undergraduate and graduate students, with an average of $1.1 million per year in research expenditures over the last three years. The current and future research thrust areas include 1) Artificial intelligence and data science; 2) Security, trust, and ethics; 3) Distributed and high-performance computing; 4) Interactive computing, 5) Theory, algorithms, and quantum computing; 5) Smart living (transportation, energy, infrastructure); 6) Networking and systems; 7) Health informatics and computational neuroscience; and 8) Digital media and entertainment.
