Job Title: School Librarian / Media Specialist
Program/Department: Education
Position Summary
This position is responsible for creating and managing a school library /media center program that supports students and staff in reaching the academic mission for students in the Neil Hellman School and the School at Northeast.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Develop and implement a library program that supports and extends classroom instruction through the use of library/media center resources in collaboration with teachers and other classroom staff.
  • Guide access to digital resources including, databases, online websites, ebooks, audiobooks, and other electronic resources.
  • Create a library space that is vibrant, welcoming, and conducive to learning for both students and school staff.
  • Provide school staff professional development opportunities in the use of information resources in a variety of formats for integration of information literacy skills across the curriculum.
  • Build, maintain, and promote multimedia collections that foster a love of learning and that support the curriculum, needs, and interests of students and school staff.
  • Schedule the use of the library facility and resources to provide optimal library experiences for students through flexible access.
  • Acquire materials not available in the school library through inter-library loan and BOCES services.
  • Work with reading and literary teachers to supplement classroom instruction especially for struggling readers who need appropriate materials and individual support.
  • Actively Participate in PBIS activities and meetings.
  • Plan and coordinates the selection and purchase of age and interest appropriate instructional materials and books for the library collection in collaboration with school staff and students.
  • Organize and facilitate scholastic book fairs.
  • Follow school and agency procedures and policies for reporting incidents. This includes behavior incident reports (IR) as well as incidents such as child/sexual abuse, substance abuse, harassment, bullying, and violence.
  • Establish positive relationships with parents and family members to create a partnership around student treatment, student behavior, and academic progress.
  • Participate in classroom grade level, and behavior/treatment meetings as well as professional training and development sessions as required or needed (e.g. TCI, CPR, emergency procedures and other agency requirements.
  • Follow all Agency policies and procedures, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to our school and students.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, clinicians, administrators, medical staff and other school staff to provide integrated support, assistance, and treatment to students.

Education and/or Experience
Requires a Master’s degree in Library Information Science or equivalent and ability to work with students who demonstrate serious emotional and behavioral challenges, ages 6-21. Bachelor’s degree with enrollment in a program that leads to a Master’s degree may be considered.
CERTIFICATION / LICENSURE
Requires NYS certification in Library Media Special or enrollment in a program that leads to Library Media Special certification.
