The BYU Student Health Center is looking for a Licensed Practical Nurse to join our team at the MTC.

This position assists missionaries in getting the necessary care and immunizations required to obtain visas for other countries, and ensure the All missionaries are prepared to enter their mission.

Clinic Nurse:

  • Immunization Clinic
    • Assess visa requirements for international travel and order the required laboratory and radiological testing
    • Interpretation of childhood vaccine requirements and under the direction of the physician, prescribe needed immunization
    • Provide decision-making triage skills in a time sensitive environment based on symptom assessment
    • Provides travel consultation by assessing routine, required, and recommended immunizations for international travel
    • May oversee the duties of a Certified Medical assistant
    • Versatility of two working environments including SHC and MTC Health Clinics
    • Assess vaccine necessity for international travel and applicable restrictions and protocols
    • Assist with completion of immunization consent forms for participants
    • Give proper VIS (vaccine immunization sheet) and appropriate vaccine education
      Perform intramuscular injection and subcutaneous injection proficiently
    • Documentation of all immunizations, injections, TB, allergy injections and other medications into the EMR
    • Administer vaccines (per manufacturer instructions) proficiently and educate clients and caregivers about age specific immunizations, precautions/contraindications, and possible adverse reactions
    • Transport vaccine(s) and maintain the cold chain process to promote desirable temperature conditions to maintain the shelf-life of the product
    • Maintain compliance with relevant policies and procedures pertaining to the role and function of nurses working in the immunization clinic
    • Implement emergency management responses to i.e., adverse reactions, anaphylaxis administer epinephrine per physician order
  • General Clinic
  • Assist with setup and break-down of wellness clinics/immunization clinics (i.e. Influenza/TB clinics)
  • May assist with completion of consent forms for wellness events/screens/vaccine clinics
  • Assist with setup and break-down of wellness/immunization/TB clinics and transport of vaccine(s) and sharps
  • Ensure proper biohazardous waste transport and disposal
  • Maintains appropriate infection control standards and precautions

General LPN Responsibilities:

  • Assist physician with procedures including pap smears, suturing, dressing changes, wound care, Covid testing.
  • Must hold current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse/Vocational nurse
  • Administers medication under the direction of a physician
  • EMR knowledge and aptitude to learn new software
  • Ability to work in urgent care high stress environment
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively and positively with physicians, staff, and patients
  • Responds promptly, professionally, and courteously to patient’s needs
  • Provides efficient effective routine patient care in compliance with clinic policies and procedures, legal and regulatory standard
  • Prepares patients for exams
  • Interviews patients, measures vital signs, and records current and historical medical information in patient record
  • Makes sure all pertinent information is available to physician (i.e.: list of meds, lab results, medication allergies, etc.)
  • Assists physician with procedures (i.e. Covid-19 testing, pap smears, suture dressings, etc.)
  • May perform biometric screenings (operation of CLIA Waived point of care testing device(s) (POCT) i.e. cholesterol, glucose, Hgb-A1c, blood pressure, height, weight, body fat%/BMI, Osteoporosis T-Score, Dermaview, hip-waist ratio, cotinine, COVID-19 rapid testing, spirometry testing, genetic testing, prostate specific antigen, C-reactive screening
  • Perform fingerstick technique and if applicable, phlebotomy
  • Perform IV therapy as directed by physician
  • Administers injections
  • Perform TB skin (PPD) tests and review results and advise follow-up care as needed
  • Administers allergy injections as directed by physicians with clear and precise orders and procedures
  • Follow-up with Allergist
  • Compliance and Procedural
    • Maintain compliance with relevant policies and procedures pertaining to the role and function of nurses working in the immunization clinic
    • Maintain appropriate infection control standards and precautions
    • Implement proper use of PPE
    • Report incidents and/or injuries/needle sticks
    • May transport CLIA Waived point of care testing device(s) (POCT) and sharps containers
    • Ensure proper biohazardous waste utilization, transport, and disposal

Other Responsibilities:

  • Exam Room
    • Maintains clean and orderly exam rooms
    • Ensures exam rooms are stocked with needed supplies and equipment
    • Inventories and coordinates ordering of medical supplies and materials
    • Cleans and sterilizes instruments following clinic policy and procedures

Minimum education/experience required: Current and active Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurse that meets professional nursing standards and pertinent local, state, and federal requirements and current CPR/BLS certifications

Preferred: All the minimum requirements plus 2-4 years’ experience in a physician’s office
