The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf (ENCSD) is a state school serving the 54 easternmost counties that provides a specialized learning environment for deaf and hard of hearing students, kindergarten through 12th grade, following a typical school calendar. The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction, low classroom ratios, career and vocational skills development, current technology, and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.


The primary purpose of this position is to provide professional nursing care to all students enrolled at NCSD in accordance with standard nursing practice and theory as outlined in the NC Board of Nursing Practice Act, agency regulations, policies, procedures, and physician orders. This position’s purpose is to maximize the quantity of in-class time by reducing the incidence of health-related absenteeism, eliminate or minimize health problems which impair learning, promote student, staff and community awareness of and participation in healthy behaviors.

This is a 10-month position that follows the Academic Calendar at Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf located in Wilson, NC. The work schedule is Monday – Friday 3rd (Night Shift). A 10% Shift differential is paid for all night shift hours worked.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Ability to apply Practical Nursing Knowledge, and knowledge of student care and treatment.
Demonstrated competency in healthcare screenings.
Knowledgeable of how to perform activities of daily living for students.
Ability to provide first aid/emergency care.
Knowledge of the 6 rights to medication administration.
Demonstrated competency in obtaining vital signs, collecting specimens and conducting sick call.
Ability to provide feedback and guidance/counsel to school physician/nursing staff on care rendered to patients.
Ability to provide student and family information on services provided by the agency, and policies and procedures of the agency.
Ability to demonstrate a professional, caring approach.
Ability to demonstrate patience in dealing with students and families.
Ability to communicate with the student at all levels of understanding using layman’s terms within HIPAA guidelines.
Ability to instruct subordinate staff on student care and daily routines and delegate when appropriate.
Ability to report, relay and document subjective and objective data to the professional nurse and physician, and follow nursing standing orders in place, report actions taken and plan of care.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Possession of a current North Carolina license to practice as a Practical Nurse.
Management preference: Two years clinical experience in the nursing profession.
