About the Position
The Lift/Gondola Mechanic plays a key role in enhancing accessibility at Oakland Zoo for our guests and staff by maintaining the gondola and sky ride. They provide regular maintenance and testing of mechanical and electrical systems and work with the Lift Manager to address incidents or system malfunctions. They demonstrate excellent judgement in all activities, proactive communication and strong collaboration with Zoo staff and external vendors and contractors.

Essential Job Duties
- Assist Lift Manager with daily testing, inspection, and necessary repairs of mechanical and electrical devices.
- Perform all routine and assigned maintenance per A.N.S.I., manufacturer, and CSC (Conservation Society of California) Lift Department standards.
- Performs Gondola startup procedures upon qualification in Gondola dynamics and potential safety related conditions.
- Documents tramway maintenance per the A.N.S.I. Code. Participates in Gondola projects, inspections, procedures, and check lists.
- Uses assigned tools, rigging equipment, tramway components, oils, grease, and safety equipment in a safe, efficient manner.
- Assists in cable splicing, cable installation, and/or replacement. Assists contractors in performing their duties.
- Inspects, measures, changes, rebuilds, and adjusts Gondola components.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Who You Are
- High mechanical aptitude and basic knowledge/skill in mechanical and electrical trades.
- Able to install large and heavy components related to tower and gondola maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently on mechanical and electrical systems related to Gondolas.
- Able and willingness to learn Aerial Systems (Gondola and Sky Ride) as well as other mechanical rides in The Zoo.
- Able to read complex manuals and write routine reports in English.
- Able to work outside, on towers and at heights in all weather conditions.
- Able to bend and twist, lift and carry 50 pounds, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for 8-hour shifts.
- Have a valid Class C Driver’s License with a clean DMV record (able to obtain authorization to drive from Zoo’s insurance provider)
- Able to work days, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

- Trade School experience
- Previous lift maintenance or transportation industry experience
- Experience with Pro Engineer
- Have experience using Auto Service Excel
Required Education
High school diploma or GED
