Lighting Systems Engineer



What You Would Get To Do:

In this capacity, the ideal candidate would represent the FIRST brand as an implanted team member for a well-known technology company. The ideal Lighting Engineer will possess a passion for how lighting can enhance productions in an event space with broadcast capabilities. They will engage in the commissioning and the maintenance of the systems that drive the facility, with special focus on the management of the lighting fixtures, networks, and control.

The role requires the ability to work effectively with many types of people within the AV and Events space, from internal team to large scale production companies. The ideal candidate will provide technical support and guidance to events and conferences at all business levels. The role includes acting as a trainer for day-to-day operating staff and to become a reference for all lighting systems when questions and issues arise.

The role requires scheduling flexibility to occasionally work outside of traditional office hours depending on demand and production requirements which can include late nights, early mornings, and weekends.

Your Contributions:

  • Take ownership of and responsibility for the upkeep and repair of all theatrical lighting fixtures in the event space.
  • Provide back-end support to production operators in events space as needed.
  • Perform on-site maintenance on equipment for event production and broadcast.

  • Design, test, evaluate and install new circuitry/equipment for use in the facility as needed.

  • Analyze and repair technical faults on equipment beyond the first line of troubleshooting and escalate for repair as needed.

  • Work with 3rd party production to augment in house lighting systems as needed including hanging of fixtures and interfacing with existing equipment, including advising on load bearing limits and managing electrical for added fixtures.

  • Identify suitable workaround when equipment has failed to ensure continuity of the service.

  • Interpret and implement instructions and requests from production meetings in order to deliver technical capabilities.

  • Produce and update technical documentation including, plots, magic sheets, and inventory.

  • Keep up-to-date with the industry and technological innovations, build and maintain a network of industry contacts and investigating new systems and techniques.

  • Be able to travel between NYC sites or assist remotely in order to perform break/fix and maintenance duties.

  • Assist Lead Engineer with inspection and maintenance of chain hoist system and motor controls for lighting grid, and monitoring the integrity of pipe grids, escalating concerns to building engineers and 3rd party vendors as needed.

  • Develop and apply remote access and workflows in the event of catastrophic closures

  • 3+ years’ experience in film production/broadcast facility/event production spaces/theater.

  • 7+ years’ professional experience.

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred but not required

    • Preferably in a tech-related field

  • Firm grasp of lighting technology concepts and terminology.

  • Experience working with some or all of the following product lines, Grand Ma, ETC Ion, ETC Source 4 Elation Fuze, Ayrton Ghibli.

  • Firm grasp of rigging concepts, including pipe grid and chain hoist systems, motor control systems, and calculating static and dynamic load limits for both pipe grids and box truss grids.

  • Work closely with others to maintain the overall health of adjacent and dependent systems.

  • Familiarity with architectural lighting systems, fixtures, and control as well as integration into theatrical system control.

  • Ability to apply digital and analogue theory and work from diagrammatic information.

  • Deep understanding of front line maintenance and diagnostics on networked environments.
  • Excellent face to face communication as well as written skills.
  • Ability to read, understand, and write technical documentation, AutoCAD/VectorWorks (or equivalent) skills would be beneficial.

  • Excellent analytical/troubleshooting practices and attention to detail. In depth understanding of TCP/IP networking

  • Ability to take a service-oriented approach to this position, with a desire to help clients achieve their best result.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure in an “On-Air” environment.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to prioritize critical elements in the workflow.

  • Ability to work well within a team.


Administrative & General:

  • Assume responsibility for own environment, ensuring adherence to health and safety policies while having clean smart surroundings

  • Work intelligently and ensure that team management is aware of problems or issues which negatively affect productivity

  • Build excellent relations with the team, clients, vendors, and key venues through positive communications
  • Ensure knowledge is shared within the team to enable them to work smarter
  • Work on ad hoc requests as required, typically during quiet times

United States Residents: The base pay for this position ranges from $92,000 - $140,000. This role is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
