The Senior Linux/Red Hat Engineer role is responsible for the installation and setup of all Linux systems and servers across the organization. Develops automation strategies and utilizes a combination of both business and technical skills as this role is responsible for building an integration of computer systems and information for meeting the specific needs of the business through design, implementation, and evaluation of current and future infrastructure initiatives for the highest level of efficiency and performance. This position is a senior member of the systems administration team to perform the installation, optimization, integration, troubleshooting, security, and upgrading of applicable systems to enable the client’s customers to effectively apply IT to all business requirements.

DUTIES /RESPONSIBILITIES

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

· Maintains a thorough and well-rounded knowledge of all Linux operating systems with Red Hat version expertise along with a solid understanding of the mechanisms required for distribution of new and upgraded software to ensure the client and customers always receive current versions of supported software as available

· Writes Shell Scripts to automate repetitive tasks

· Manages user account information, including rights, security and systems groups (Linux, eDirectory)

· Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new technologies to optimize the Linux operating system environment.

· Manage, set-up, administer, support and troubleshoot Linux servers.

· Works with senior staff to recommend and design systems architecture and topology perspectives in building and supporting the Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

· Works closely with various IT groups including but not limited to project management, database administration, network and security teams, application team-assisting in the overall architectural design

· Creates, executes and reports on testing and implementation

· Defines and maintains server operations, processes and procedures; service and operational level agreements and reports compliance and server build requirements as needed

· Provide support and monitors performance and reporting, problem identification and resolution

· Provide regular status reports and gather requirements from the departments and provide input into the infrastructure products that are bought or built

· Maintains operating systems and associated infrastructure software

· Design and document SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for system administration activities

· Install and maintain Server OS and configuration using tools automated installation like Kickstart and Configuration Management tools like Puppet

· Respond to service calls remotely using laptop over secure VPN

COORDINATION/COMPLIANCE FUNCTIONS:

· Coordinate/consult with subject matter experts throughout the organization; helping to arrive at a consensus to determine application security requirements while translating those into effective controls within supported applications, processes, and users

· Manages and maintains software licenses to maintain compliance as required

· Provide support to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations (i.e., Privacy Law, PCI and/or Sarbanes-Oxley, etc.) verifying necessary protocols are integrated into all large-scale global enterprise applications

· Acts at the point of contact and regularly schedules maintenance and upgrades to assigned servers, when appropriate

· Required to periodically create, deliver and make presentations with necessary materials to support project with concise details and information geared to applicable audience

NON-TECHNICAL FUNCTIONS:

· Creates documents and keeps current Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Configuration Management (CM) procedures and guidance to provide consistency of application performance and functionality

· Able to clearly communicate verbally and in written form – articulating complex thoughts and ideas in small or large group settings

· The ability to work under light supervision, as a self-starter and show progress in the project and/or tasks as outlined is paramount to the success of this position

· Excellent interpersonal communication skills including heavy telephone and email communications; ability to clearly and precisely provide scope of project status, additional needs and identify problem areas

· Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills with an ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines

· Provides superior customer service to internal customers, working patiently and effectively through each issue with confidence

NECESSARY EXPERIENCE/SKILL SET:

· 5+ years of UNIX/Linux server administration experience in enterprise Linux (SUSE, RedHat) system administration, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server experience

· Current industry standard certifications (e.g., LPIC-1 Linux Administrator, Comp TIA Network+ and Linux) required

· Experience scripting with strong shell scripting skills (e.g. Bash, Perl, Python)

· Hands-on experience installing, configuring and maintaining Linux servers including an understanding of applicable security principles related to server hardening

· Expertise in system administration practices and troubleshooting including but not limited to installation, configuration, deployment, security, maintenance, root cause analysis and backup enterprise services

· Knowledge of Micro Focus Open Enterprise Server and Zenworks, is preferred

· Virtual machine configuration and management using KVM

· Experience in disaster recovery / business continuity planning and methodologies is highly preferred

· Network administration, including switch and firewall configuration and management with in-depth knowledge of system and network security best practices

· Windows environment knowledge with demonstrable understanding of basics of storage permissions and group management, integration of Windows services with Linux environments and Windows application to access Linux systems - able to architect solutions based on best practices with proven results

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

· Associate Degree (minimum) or Bachelors’ Degree in Information Technology, Computer Programming, Security Technology or other related coursework is strongly preferred

· Experience in large-scale system integration projects is a must

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

· Must be able to provide proof of identity and ability to legally work in the United States

· Regular and predictable attendance is required

· Ability to maintain confidentiality of client and customer information with access to personnel and financial data

· Must be able to sit for long periods of time in a primarily sedentary typical office environment, but able to move about the workplace to meet with internal clients and other workers

· Must have the visual acuity of long hours in front of monitor and typing on a keyboard with multiple keystrokes a day
