JOB TITLE: Local History Assistant, Grade 17
LOCATION: Local History Department/ Headquarters Library
DATE AVAILABLE: March 1, 2023
SALARY: $1,441 per month
HOURS: 25 hours per week including:
One weekend in a five-week rotation (Saturday 8:45-6:15, Sunday 12:55-6:15 in the same weekend)
Typical Schedule (with adjustments for weekend time) is M-F 8:30-1:30
(Note: Must be flexible to accommodate schedule changes, may be asked to work other times as needed)
EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Must complete pre-employment testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responds to patron and staff questions about local history and genealogy via various means of communication
- Helps patrons use library resources and equipment including books, microform, photocopier, and electronic databases
- Assists with various projects in the department (examples include giving tours of the Kennedy Room, participating in local history & genealogy programs, digitization and transcription work on archival collections, assisting with exhibits and the Kennedy Free Press)
- Helps maintain all the collections within the Kennedy Room, including processing new materials, shelving books, indexing pamphlet files, and ensuring equipment is operating properly
- Remains aware of safety and security issues and takes appropriate action as needed
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Excellent interpersonal & customer service skills that display a positive attitude, cultural sensitivity, a sense of humor, and the ability to engage with people from all backgrounds and age groups
- A genuine interest in local history and/or genealogy
- Strong research skills
- Ability to take direction and to work independently but also in a team environment
- The ability to read older cursive handwriting is a bonus
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to drive to other libraries or community outreach
