Business Need / Purpose of Role:

Under the general direction of the Operations Manager, direct, supervise and coordinate the machining of pump components. Monitor and control department expenses and improve cost of quality. Mentor team and ensure they are following Company safety requirements

Objectives & Measurement

Key Responsibilities and Specific Accountabilities:

Including but not limited to:

  • Plan, direct and supervise job performance of 30 to 40 employees with respect to quality of operations that include a wide variety of machine tools, with and without numerical controls, tool-making and calibration repairs
  • Supervise the work of assembly staff. Set production goals and meet target dates. Complete paperwork daily related to the assembly line
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of workers engaged in production machining of raw castings, shafts and other metallic workpieces
  • Review machine part programs and tools to ensure optimum output
  • Establish personnel training and development programs
  • Apply knowledge of machine shop procedures, machine tool setup and operating techniques, and production machining methods
  • Collaborate with Production Planning to schedule production and monitor work in process in accordance with planned shipping schedules
  • Participate in production and supervisory staff meetings. Provide support to the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Recommend overtime schedules and ensure appropriate staffing for overtime
  • Monitor the operations from a labor and equipment utilization standpoint. Make appropriate changes to existing methods or develop new procedures to improve production, quality, and manufacturing costs. Follow up all manufacturing problems, cost overruns, etc. relevant to labor, material, or equipment and take remedial action or make recommendations on action to be taken
  • Direct and instruct personnel with respect to methods of operation, company policies, rules and regulations. Make recommendations on hiring, transfers, promotions, terminations and wage administration. Handle grievances at the primary level. Perform appraisal performance, conduct merit reviews and motivate subordinates in the interests of productivity, morale, and good housekeeping
  • Manage cost of quality. Develop corrective actions to improve quality and reduce bad quality cost. Participate in the development of department expense budgets and assure that approved budgets are maintained
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Quality Control Managers in the disposition of defective material
  • Observe Quality, Environmental Health & Safety policy and assure that all personnel are adhering to the policy without any exceptions. Ensure that all subordinates are aware and understand the Company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program and that they are following PPE and all safety requirements
  • Ensure that all safety, housekeeping and lean practices are enforced
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Job Knowledge / Education and Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Engineering degree in related fields, such as Applied, Manufacturing or Mechanical is preferred. industrial, manufacturing, and production engineering basics or the equivalent knowledge of such skill
  • At least 5 years (preferably 10 years) of experience in CNC, manual, and applied machining technologies
  • Strong experience in reading, comprehending and interpreting blueprints

  • Monitor the operations from a labor and equipment utilization standpoint. Make appropriate changes to existing methods or develop new procedures to improve production, quality, and manufacturing costs.
  • Foresee problems that might slow production and make a plan to improve that area to avoid delays in production
  • Follow up all manufacturing problems, cost overruns, etc. relevant to labor, material, or equipment and take remedial action or make recommendations on action to be taken.
