About the Transit Maintenance Machinist
The Maintenance Machinist is responsible for performing machining activities on mechanical and automotive equipment for Transit vehicles in the Vehicle Maintenance Section. This Journey Level position requires skills in machining techniques, machining methods, and with tool operating procedures. You must be able to read blueprint specifications to fabricate replacement parts.
In addition to an amazing full-range benefit package, the qualified Maintenance Machinist we hire enter at 90% of the pay scale. Additionally, shift differential is paid to those working second and third shifts. Shift pay is 5% for second shift and 7.5% for third shift, on top of hourly pay. Current hourly rates are:
- $39.11 - first shift
- $41.07 - second shift
- $42.04 - third shift
The Mission of Vehicle Maintenance is to provide customers safe, dependable, clean transportation in a timely, cost effective, environmentally sensitive manner, with a workforce that values teamwork, communication, and diversity.
The Vehicle Maintenance section operates three shifts (day, swing, and graveyard) seven days a week at various locations throughout King County. Openings may occur on all shifts.

Safety Sensitive Position
This position is considered safety sensitive. Applicants for positions defined as safety sensitive are required to undergo drug testing prior to employment, and subsequent to commencement of employment, will be subject to random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, return to duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing in compliance with Federal DOT alcohol and controlled substances testing program protocols.
Job Duties

Maintenance Machinist, you will:
- Perform skilled machining operations on mechanical/automotive equipment in support of the Vehicle Maintenance Section.
- Set up and operate manual and C.N.C. machine tools such as engine lathes, grinders, honing, milling machines, drill presses, metal spraying equipment and metal working machines.
- Repair and rebuild automotive/mechanical components from equipment such as engines, transmissions, differentials, gears, and shafting.
- Remove broken bolts and fasteners, repair and replace damaged screw thread (helical), thread inserts, and recut threads.
- Fabricate hydraulic systems and special fittings and attachments for automotive and other equipment.
- Disassemble, repair, re-assemble and install pumps, compressors, and electric motors in proper alignment.
- Fabricate replacement parts from raw material.
- Read and follow blueprints and sketches to repair and fabricate replacement parts. Fabricate necessary fixtures, tools and dies.
- Determine precise tolerances using micrometers, dial indicators, Vernier Height Gauges, and other appropriate instruments for measurement.
- Using prescribed safety methods, rig, lift and transport heavy motors, pumps, engines, transmissions, valves, and related equipment from one work location to another.
- Evaluate needs and failures and determine appropriate course of action.
- May provide direction to other employees in the skilled crafts area on assigned work projects.
- Clean and store equipment and tools. Design and sharpen tool bits as necessary. Keep work area clear.
- Provide machining support for the streetcar/light rail.
- Work with computer terminal to input and extract data as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
At a minimum, to qualify for this position you will need:
- Completion of a 4-year machinist apprenticeship program or any equivalent combination of experience and education, which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the work at Journey Level.
- Knowledge of industrial safety rules, shop safety rules, and applicable regulations and procedures that apply to a vehicle repair facility.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of automotive parts and components.
- Skill in conceptualizing, measuring, and fabricating metal parts, tools, equipment, fixtures, and related metal items.
- Skilled in the use of hand tools, air drills, die grinders, torque wrenches, and hydraulic presses.
- Skill in basic mathematics.
- Ability to work from drawings, blueprints, schematics, specifications, sketches, and from oral and written directions.
- Ability to input and extract data as needed from a computer. Skilled in CAD/CAM software.
- Good communications skills for the purposes of being able to read, write, and follow verbal instructions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and maintain quality standards.
- Ability to work on a team with a diverse group of employees.
- Ability to meet and maintain the attendance requirements of the position.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- A valid Washington State Driver License with acceptable five-year driving record are required. Applicants holding a valid out of state license must obtain their Washington State Driver License by hire date.
- Verified completion of a recognized machinist apprenticeship program or equivalent professional experience.
- Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination.
- Must pass drug and alcohol testing provisions for safety sensitive positions as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation, 49 CFR Parts 40 and 655.
- Willingness and availability to work varying shifts on weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Selection Process:
Applications will be screened to determine whether candidates meet minimum qualifications, and for clarity, completeness, and responsiveness to application instructions. The most competitive candidates presenting evidence through the details in their application that they meet or exceed the qualifications noted above may be invited to participate in a testing process. Those passing the test will be invited to participate in one or more panel interviews.
Testing Information:
There will be a one hour written test. If selected, you must take the test onsite in King County, WA. Candidates are tested in Journey Level maintenance machinist knowledge. You are only permitted to test once every six months. Interviews will be offered to candidates with satisfactory test scores.
Interview Information:
Unless residing out of state, all interviews will be conducted in-person. Those who interview successfully will be placed on an eligibility list for placement into vacancies as they occur.
Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, being hired will be contingent on passing all requirements outlined for King County safety sensitive positions. Those requirements include: an acceptable five-year driving record, satisfactory reference checks or record reviews, two-year FTA background verification, and passing a pre-employment drug screen and physical.
Vacancy Information:
This recruitment will be used to fill two immediate career service positions.

Work Schedule:
Employees in this non-exempt classification work a 40-hour per week schedule with two consecutive days off, but not necessarily Saturday and Sunday. Work schedules and locations are based on a seniority system and schedules are bid on three times a year.
Employees must be able and willing to work any shift, including any combination of days off, at any location. Swing and/or graveyard shift vacancies will be the most likely openings. These positions are FLSA non-exempt and therefore eligible for overtime pay.
Work Environment:
Work is performed at a vehicle maintenance base with exposure to high noise level; oil, grease, natural gas, diesel, and other chemical fumes; and mechanical and electrical hazards typical of a vehicle repair facility. Some duties are also performed outdoors, involving exposure to all varieties of weather.
Physical Requirements:
The job requires basic levels of physical skill and regular kneeling, bending, squatting, reaching above and below the waist, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying items weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasional lifting and carrying, with assistance, of items up to 100 pounds.
