The City of Richmond Department of Public Utilities is seeking a qualified candidate to fill two (2) Maintenance and Operations Crew Chief positions. The selected candidates will be responsible for leading crews that perform routine maintenance and repairs.


This position is considered an Essential Personnel, which means that the incumbent is required to work when the City is closed due to public emergencies, critical or hazardous conditions or inclement weather.


This individual may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call as needed.

Duties include but are not limited to

  • Supervising equipment operators and pipeline technicians that maintain and repair wastewater infrastructure;
  • Assembling tools, materials and equipment for daily work assignments;
  • Transporting personnel to and from work site;
  • Driving and operating small equipment and machinery;
  • Performing routine maintenance inspections of piping systems;
  • Responding to work orders;
  • Maintaining equipment, machinery or vehicles in good working order while observing established safety protocols and procedures for safe operation.

Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Considerable knowledge of applicable local codes and ordinances; storm water infrastructure and basic drainage; Material Safety Data Sheets; forecasting and planning and safety rules and regulations. Demonstrated skill with effective oral and written communication; excavating underground structures and pipelines; computer proficiency including GIS systems; closing work orders; people management. Demonstrated abilitiy to manage time effectively and self-manage; communicate with diverse populations; read maps; and problem solve.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE


  • High School Diploma or GED;
  • One year of college or specialized training in area of focus;
  • Two years of equipment operation/driving experience or maintenance experience in the area related to assignment;
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, AND/OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Some assignments may require a valid Driver's License with a satisfactory driving;
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire;
  • Some assignments may require a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

PREFERRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
  • One (1) year of supervisory experience;
  • One (1) year experience working in Construction, Utilities or Plumbing fields.
