Job description

This is a part-time, hourly position, depending on assignment, works under the supervision of a lead worker, crew
leader, supervisor or superintendent. The Maintenance Worker I is an entry level part-time position performing
unskilled, semiskilled and some skilled duties related to the repair and maintenance of open spaces, facilities and
private homes; and related work as required. THIS POSITION MAY REQUIRE MORNING, EVENING,
WEEKENDS AND HOLIDAY WORK.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following is a list of typical duties assigned to this classification. The duties included on this list are
examples and not intended to be all-inclusive or restrictive.


• Prepare surfaces for painting and apply finish or coverings using brushes, rollers, spray equipment and

cutters as necessary.
  • Repair or replace broken pipe, cut and thread pipe, clean clogged drains and sewer lines.
  • Dig ditches and install drainage pipes.
  • Repair springs, handles and other hardware on kitchen and other equipment.
  • Repair, replace or perform maintenance on washers, diaphragms, valves, fittings, ballcocks, drinking
fountain bubblers, and shut-off valves.
  • Repair or replace toilets, urinals, dispensers, partitions, sinks and other fixtures.
  • Repair, replace or perform routine maintenance on door knobs, hinges, closures, strike plate, and panic
bars.
  • Replace ceramic, ceiling, and floor tile.
  • Remove, replace or repair carpeting, drapes, plaster and dry wall.
  • Repair, install, assemble and assist in construction of doors, partitions, furniture, counters, bulletin
boards, chalk boards, shelving, pictures and other items.
  • Remove and replace broken glass and/or board up windows.
  • Maintain public grounds by mowing lawns and collecting trash.
  • Replace and maintain flowers and shrubs, etc.
  • Mix, pour and do rough cement finishing.
  • Repair, replace, service and maintain electrical systems, including conduit and duct systems, light and

power circuits, motor appliances, plugs, ballasts, fans, switches, bells, intercom and buzzer systems,

clocks, and fire alarm systems.
  • Install interior and exterior wiring for equipment and appliances.
  • Replace fuses.
  • Assemble lighting fixtures and field lighting systems.
  • Requisition supplies, parts, and labor needs.
  • Load and unload equipment, tools, and other products related to light and heavy duty maintenance and
repair activities.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on buildings, grounds and equipment.
  • Operates machinery such as sanders, planers, joiners, power saws; power drills, routers, pneumatic
power tools, paint sprayer, power grinder and related equipment.
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Troubleshoot breakdowns or problems with site maintenance.
  • Keep required records on work performed and plan and lay out assigned tasks.
  • May be required to work shifts, weekends and/or holidays.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential duties for this position including building

maintenance, semi-skilled labor, carpentry and/or a related field is highly desirable.

Licenses, Certificate and/or Special Requirements

  • A valid California class “C” driver’s license, safe driving record, and proof of insurance are required at the
time of appointment.

TESTING & SELECTION PROCESS

to continue in the selection process. The selection process may include a supplement questionnaire, a written
test, a performance test, and/or an oral interview to evaluate the applicant’s skill, training, and experience. An

established testing date.

If selected, a conditional employment offer will be made and the candidate will participate in a pre-employment

process, which will include a comprehensive background check (employment reference checks and
fingerprinting through the California Department of Justice) and a pre-placement medical examination. The exam
will include a drug screening.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

City employee may be eligible to participate in a benefit program including holidays, vacations, savings and
retirement plans, health programs, educational reimbursement and other benefits listed in the Hawthorne
Municipal Employee Association (HMEA) Part-Time Memorandum of Understanding. Benefits may change due
