The City of Roanoke is seeking a Maintenance Technician II – Turf Crew Leader.The ideal candidate will support the Transportation Division by participating and leading the work of a Turf Crew. Engaging in a variety of turf and landscape maintenance activities throughout the City Rights-of-Way (ROW) and responsible for adhering to an established mowing cycle. Performs skilled turf maintenance including mowing, string trimming, blowing, edging, aerating and overseeding. Must have knowledge of and ability to skillfully operate and do routine daily service and maintenance on a wide variety of equipment including Ventrac, zero turn and walk-behind mowers, string trimmers, edgers and blowers. Performs semi-skilled landscape maintenance including minor tree and shrub pruning, brush removal, mulching, planting and other landscape maintenance duties. Operates light and heavy equipment during snow removal. Must be able to obtain a valid CDL B license within 6 months of employment with tanker endorsement. Must possess a Registered Technician Pesticide and Fertilizer Applicator License’s within 12 months of employment. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in turf or landscape maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.REASONING ABILITY Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license with Hazardous Material and tank endorsement. May require Playground Inspection Certification to be acquired after hire.
