Job Summary
The Aerospace Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) is a diverse scientific organization that provides a broad and innovative research and development backplane for a growing space enterprise. PSL’s impact is grown through a diverse research portfolio that blends foundational scientific research with cutting-edge technology development to serve a broad customer base. The Photonics Technology Department is responsible for research in photonic devices, atomic clocks, laser technology, and free space laser applications including lidar and laser communications, all of which are key enablers for a wide variety of national security space mission applications. We are seeking a Section Manager to focus on lidar, laser beacon, and fiber laser technology development. You will also be responsible for leading and contributing to research projects within the section’s technical portfolio. S/he will manage a team of research staff, contribute to the administering of the section with the department director, work with customers to develop projects from proposals, manage overall research directions, and contribute meaningfully and directly to research activities.
This position will be located 100% onsite in El Segundo, CA.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • You will manage a team of research staff of 5–10 working multiple projects
  • S/he will execute and/or lead advanced experiments lidar, laser beacon, and fiber laser development to support multiple customers in various application areas
  • You will work with department director to develop and execute research strategies in the relevant technology areas
  • S/he will partner with management on creating and executing to projects’ budgets and schedules and planning for future efforts
  • Work with customers to identify new opportunities, develop proposals to execute on such opportunities according to corporate research strategies

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or equivalent is required
  • (8) years of experience in a research laboratory environment in lasers, sensors, non-linear optics, or related areas is required
  • You should have strong people management skills, which include training, motivating, and directing employees to optimize workplace productivity and promote professional growth
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
  • PhD degree in a STEM field or equivalent is highly preferred
  • Subject matter expertise in lidar, atmospheric laser propagation, fiber lasers, sensors, non-linear optics, etc.
  • Relevant experience or education in laboratory experimentation, developing test strategies, experiment design, and integration and test
  • Experience with LabView, Python, MATLAB, Mathematica

The grade-based pay range for this job is listed below. Individual salaries within that range are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge and skills.

$105,000 - $140,000 - $185,000
