The Office of the Chancellor has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Manager of Chancellor’s Office Operations position.

Since joining CU Denver in July 2020, Chancellor Michelle Marks has pursued an ambitious vision for the future of CU Denver and its impact as a leading urban public research university.

An innovator dedicated to making higher education equitable for the good of society, Dr. Marks believes the urgent national need for accessible, affordable, high-quality education, amplified in this time of great societal challenge, demands long-term solutions. She is leading CU Denver to address long-standing educational inequities through a reimagined approach to lifelong learning.

In her first year as chancellor, she led the university in a highly collaborative, ambitious strategic planning process, completed in June 2021. CU Denver’s 2030 Strategic Plan promotes social mobility and workforce sustainability through an evolved vision of a university that expands education, enhances economies, and uplifts communities to work for all. It outlines goals for advancing research and creative work, developing an open innovation district in downtown Denver, and being known as a university for life, among others. Dr. Marks continues to engage the university community during every step of the implementation phase of this strategic plan to realize its bold goals.

Externally, Dr. Marks brings a renewed focus to forging leading community, institutional, and industry partnerships that will not only accelerate CU Denver’s vision but also align the university’s growth with community and workforce needs.

Reporting directly to the Chancellor, the Manager of Chancellor’s Office Operations designs and drives office workflows to support the Chancellor’s day to day work and long-term priorities. This position oversees the chancellor’s time commitments, and conducts research as needed to prepare the Chancellor for upcoming commitments and responsibilities of all varieties. The role is the primary convenor of office staff and ensures coordination among the team and between the team and other key units.

Responsibilities include:

Time Management and Coordination:

  • Supports the highest and best use of the chancellor’s time
    • Works in coordination with the chancellor and chancellor’s office staff to plan regular interaction with key audiences
    • Plans and manages requests for chancellor’s presence to ensure strategic and balanced use of the chancellor’s time with key constituencies and for university events, community interactions, travel, speaking engagements, etc. Serves as liaison with other key departments to provide clarity of expectations and information.
    • In concert with Chancellor and EA, lead on prioritizing conflicting needs; handling matters expeditiously and proactively, follows through on projects to successful completion, often with deadline pressure, and sometimes with last-minute changes
  • Collaborates closely with chief of staff, provost, events, advancement, communications and other core partner areas.
  • In line with needs of the executive, develops and implements strategies to increase operational efficiency.

Briefings and Deliverables:

  • Maintains oversight of the chancellor’s schedule and preparedness for commitments
    • Works closely and effectively with the chancellor to anticipate and keep her prepared for upcoming commitments and responsibilities
    • Establishes systems to support office efficiency; sets deadlines and standards with partner offices for production of key deliverables and prep documents.
    • Researches, gathers, organizes, and summarizes information for briefings so the chancellor is prepared for every meeting
    • Provides logistical oversight and guidance to each activity and meeting attended by the chancellor, on and off campus
  • Provides efficient and effective delivery and integration of operations for the executive office including oversight of calendar, arranging complex and detailed travel plans, and coordination with a broad range of contacts.

Management Responsibilities:

  • Supervises Chancellor’s Executive Assistant. Provides direction on priority level and offers feedback and coaching as needed. Maintains awareness of all Chancellor commitments and logistics and serves as back-up for scheduling needs.

Staffing and Events:

  • As needed, staffs Chancellor at speaking engagements and events. Does advance work to confirm logistics ahead of time and receive approval from Chancellor.
  • Serves as point of contact to high-level external guests or delegations. Manages itineraries and provides concierge-level services.

Office Operations:

  • In collaboration with the budget office, manages budget and financial matters in the chancellor’s office.
  • Working with the Chief of Staff, supports meetings of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and other university leadership groups.
  • Serves as point of contact for communication emanating from the office of the chancellor relative to time commitments and operational details
  • Assures administrative staff in the chancellor’s office maintain appropriate storage of official documents and they are retrievable as needed
  • Ensures adherence to all CU policies
  • The above is not an exhaustive list and the manager will be expected to perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis.

  • Five years of experience in administrative or operational management
  • Experience working in large, complex organizations
  • Proven knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

The position requires extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for office operational management.

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seven years of experience in administrative or operational management
  • Experience supporting CEO or senior level executives and managing complex and sensitive issues
  • Knowledge of higher education organizational culture, policies, and processes

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $85,000 to $100,000.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
