POSITION DESCRIPTION – Linn County

Master Gardener / Horticulture Outreach Coordinator (approved 11.17.22)

Job Description:
Under general supervision, the coordinator will work with a team of staff and volunteers to plan and implement the Master

Gardener education and volunteer service program in Linn County, IA within the Land Grant mission of Iowa State University.

The coordinator facilitates Master Gardener classes, organizes special program committees, and implements horticulture education related events for the public to demonstrate community impact. In addition, the coordinator will seek beneficial partnerships to engage citizens in education in areas such as community gardens, sustainable landscape, urban agriculture, and local foods.

Primary Location: ISU Extension & Outreach – Linn County – office based in Cedar Rapids, IA

Status: 30-40 hours a week, non-exempt w/ flexible schedule; primarily daytime work, but regular nights and occasional weekend work required.

Compensation: Hourly commensurate with education and experience; Wage Range $18-20

Benefits: % of Employer Provided Health, Life and Dental insurance optional; Paid time off; sick leave.

Nine (9) paid holidays per year; IPERS retirement benefits.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

SKILLS

  • Ability to coordinate research-based education with fidelity to meet measurable outcomes.
  • Ability to lead and support volunteers and partners to collaborative results in response to community needs.
  • Effective and timely communication skills, ability to utilize a variety of communication styles and modalities (phone, email, social media), including conflict management.
  • Demonstrated leadership & organizational skills, capable of delegating tasks and coordinating volunteer efforts.
  • Working operational knowledge of audio-visual equipment and office machinery locally and off-site.
  • Implements professionalism in client and volunteer confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently, and as a team with office staff and community partners (existing and new).
  • Able to lift and move 40 pounds.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum AA college education, and minimum of 2 years’ experience in one or more areas of the position description.
  • Horticulture education or minimum demonstrated 4 years horticulture experience.
  • Event Coordination or Volunteer Management experience
  • Demonstrated group facilitation and presentation skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent, Access, Outlook, Constant Contact, Zoom.
  • Proficient in social media platforms.
  • Excellent people skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grant writing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to establish partnerships and networks
  • Experience facilitating educational programs

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

  • Recruit, screen and identify volunteers as required by local and state policies and guidelines.
  • Engage and support current volunteers for ongoing educational opportunities and to sufficiently operate all activities.
  • Oversee and participate in volunteer recognition programs and special events.
  • Maintain complete files for all Master Gardener program volunteers including reporting database.
  • Maintain all effective correspondence for the Master Gardener program with volunteers, administration, Council, and the community. Routinely advises Director and Council of program impacts and needs.
  • Adheres to all Director and Council directives regarding policies and procedures.
  • Work with Master Gardener Exec and Steering Committee and other volunteer committees to carry out county- sponsored activities, events, marketing, and social media in compliance with state and local Council policy and guidelines.
  • Works with Master Gardener Exec and Steering Committees to ensure proper accounting practices for all external funds procured.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

  • Develop a plan of programming with the Master Gardeners to demonstrate community impact for community needs. May include opportunities to deliver programming as approved by County Director.
  • Provide educational outreach to the general public through coordinating local conferences, webinars and speakers in subject areas such as urban agriculture, local foods, community gardens.
  • Encouraged to write grants and obtain contracts to expand Extension horticulture education offerings.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

  • Post events on the Extension Calendar and report attendance (including Civil Rights).
  • Support Master Gardener committees in coordinating efforts to schedule educational events for the public.
  • Support efforts to maintain the ISU Extension and Outreach – Linn County Master Gardener website and social media in collaboration with the County Director
  • With the County Director, develop Master Gardener displays for the office and for external events.
  • With the County Director, ensure adequate branding of Master Gardener program and confirm that materials are in accordance with the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Visual Identity Guide.

OTHER

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Personal vehicle and proof of insurance; must have reliable transportation.
  • May be required to transport activity items.
  • Mileage is reimbursed at the federal rate.
