Pay Range

$123,960 - $166,992 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have openings for Materials and Chemical Staff Scientists to conduct a full range of moderate to complex research in the areas of tritium programs within Superblock Facilities. You will actively participate with and be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research in support of nuclear materials programs and other national security programs. These positions are in the Plutonium Science and Technology group within the Materials Science Division.

In this role you will

  • Conduct moderately complex to complex research in tritium processing, material and chemical analyses, and/or chemical process design and testing.
  • Actively participate in the focused research programs centered on hydrogen isotopes and/or nuclear materials programs, including handling and analysis of hazardous materials such as tritium, beryllium, and uranium.
  • Actively participate in the development of methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria to design, build, maintain, or modify specialized equipment/instrumentation in nuclear facilities.
  • Perform hands-on work in gloveboxes and other contamination enclosures within a nuclear facility environment.
  • Perform work in a small-team environment, with extensive cross-disciplinary interactions amongst colleagues, other teams, facility operations, etc.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Nuclear Engineering, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Broad laboratory experience including chemical and material processing and analysis.
  • Experience operating computers to collect, analyze, and document scientific results.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research and development environment.
  • Proficient interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Ability and willingness to obtain and maintain tritium handler certification (LLNL will provide training for this certification to successful candidates)

Qualifications We Desire

  • Knowledge of and experience working with hydrogen isotopes within a highly regulated environment.
  • Experience in process controls and operations for high throughput experiments (e.g., chemical separation processes, gas mix, or vacuum system operations, etc.).
  • Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
