The Media Services Technician plays a diverse and intricate role in the operations of Media Services. The position involves high priority response to classroom support needs, which includes assisting faculty with operating media equipment, troubleshooting sound and video projection issues, and assisting with setting up additional instructional technologies as needed. The Media Services Technician resides in the Media Lab and provides support for faculty, staff, and students in the use of equipment, media production, event support, media lab support, and technical training and assistance to campus constituents. This position is responsible for setting up sound systems, video projection, and audio recording devices in support of lectures and a range of campus events. An increasingly important and complex aspect of this position is knowledge and experience with Extron configuration and utility software, along with a strong understanding of network infrastructure, including switches and AV switchers. This individual is responsible for communicating with others to determine parameters of projects and manage projects to successful completion. In close collaboration with the Media Services team, this position schedules and performs routine maintenance on equipment, and participates in the installation, modernization, and continuous improvement of the audiovisual infrastructure across the Skidmore campus.
Primary Job Duties:
1. Classroom and Event Support
- Interacts with and provides technical and event support for faculty, staff, students, and guests of the college.
- Coordinate and setup media equipment to ensure successful operation in a timely manner for evening and weekend events.
- Respond with a professional attitude to classroom technology issues quickly and efficiently. Make minor repairs as needed.
- Assures the proper operation of audiovisual equipment used for campus events.
- Quickly adapts to specific needs of presenters, problem solves, and maintains composure under highly stressful and time intensive conditions.
- Collaborates with Media Services colleagues to ensure proper event coverage.
2. Preventative Maintenance
- Responsible for routinely checking equipment functionality in all multimedia classrooms, auditoria, and portable media carts.
- Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and schedule upgrades of software. Replace podium components as needed.
- Interface with vendors and assist with equipment installation.
- Keep current in the field, with an eye towards new solutions and efficiencies.
3. Strategic Planning and Project Management
- Continuously identifies and remains aware of the College's Media Services needs by providing end-user support, attending and participating in regular department meetings.
- Continuously researches and explores new technology and its application (e.g., reviewing blogs, journals, and industry publications; participating in professional organizations; attending media related conferences and other professional development opportunities.
- Consults with the Media Services team to suggest audiovisual upgrades/changes when needed to build, maintain and improve IT operations and meet constituents' needs.
- Takes on project assignments and communicates with colleagues throughout the process of project completion.
4. Production Services
- Maintains the technical skills necessary to process audio and/or video content, including understanding of campus streaming video options.
- Assists with the printing of digital images and posters.
- Collaborates with clients and staff to determine and manage the expected outcomes of
production projects. 5. Media Lab Assistance
- Assist with conversion and/or transfer of media between various formats.
- Manage the check-in and check-out of Media Services equipment, and assure individuals understand how to use the equipment.
Education: An Associate’s Degree in IT or a related field from a regionally accredited institution is preferred.Experience:
- A high degree of technical knowledge of AV hardware and software is desired.
- Knowledge of, competency in, and familiarity with Extron or similar AV control systemsis a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Experience in providing excellent customer service.
- Demonstrated initiative and flexibility.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
- Experience with video editing and a variety of multimedia file formats.
- Ability to multi-task and manage various project elements simultaneously
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $23.00 - $24.00 per hour
