County employees are subject to the County Promotion Rule for step placement in accordance with Comp Ord 1.3.5.

The County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for

MEDICAL CLAIMS SPECIALIST
This position requires comprehensive application of claims processing and functions that support the business operations.
Medical Claims Specialists initiate billing from the inception of claims to the adjudication of claims to all appropriate payer types, including but not limited to Medicare and Medi-Cal; and provide technical assistance to colleagues, support supervisory staff, initiate and monitors billing activities, including conduct claims follow-up, handle incoming and outgoing telephone calls, provide training for staff and contractors and assist the medical billing unit with any other necessary tasks while meeting production and quality standards.

Education and/or Experience:


1. Two (2) years of work experience processing medical claims; OR,

2. Three (3) years of work experience performing detailed billing and account reconciliation.

Interviews and Hiring Process


Interviews are scheduled to begin on Monday, November 14, 2022.
Qualified applicants will be notified via email of the time and location. Job offers for selected candidates will be made shortly after the interviews. Candidates should be prepared to immediately complete background paperwork, upon receipt of a job offer.

The timeline for this recruitment is outlined below. Please note that dates are approximate and are dependent upon the successful completion of each step of the process.

  • Job Offer and Background Process begins: Shortly after the interviews.

  • Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.

  • Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of background or other mutually agreed upon date.

Condition of Employment

Employees who work at County locations subject to the California Department of Public Health State Public Health Officer order are required to be fully vaccinated. In addition, booster-eligible employees must receive their booster by March 1, 2022, or within 15 days of becoming eligible for a booster if they are not eligible as of March 1, 2022. If there are CDPH date changes for Booster compliance, employees must come into compliance in accordance with that date.

If unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated (including booster), employees in some locations covered by the Public Health Officer Orders who remain in the workplace may be eligible for an accommodation and may need to undergo weekly or twice weekly testing dependent on their work location.

Evaluation Process


Qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information contained in the supplemental questionnaire.
