GENERAL SUMMARY:

The lead medical physicist works within the Department of Radiation Oncology. The incumbent reports to the Chief of Physics and works under the guidance of the Director of Clinical Physics. The role serves as a local administrator for a given site/area within the broader department. Performs and reviews all aspects of radiotherapy patient and equipment related planning and quality assurance.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Supports Director of Clinical Physics by handling day to day clinical issues for given area.

2. Works closely with the Director of Clinical Physics, Chief Dosimetrist and Chief Therapist to develop new policies/procedures for broader department as well as on a local level.

3. Responsible for implementing new physics policies/procedures on a local level.

4. Focused on leading physics projects which will promote growth at that clinical site.

5. Works with new hires for onboarding and training processes.

6. Collaborates with physicists at other sites to promote overall standardization of physics procedures within the broader department.

7. Coordinates with Physician Clinical Director and other local leadership to ensure the safe and accurate administration of radiation therapy.

8. Interfaces with other hospital departments to maintain proper integration of Radiation Oncology within the broader hospital workflow.

9. Responsible for the radiation safety of patients, staff, and visitors within the local department.

10. Responsibilities may include assignments of clinical service, research/development and education/training as per Staff Physicist job description.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:

  • Master’s degree or PhD degree in physics, medical physics or related field or Doctorate of Medical Physics.

B. Work Experience:

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience as a Medical Physicist in a cancer treatment setting.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:

  • Certification in therapeutic medical physics (or therapeutic radiological physics or radiological physics) by either:

1. American Board of Radiology.

2. American Board of Medial Physics.

  • None

WORKING CONDITIONS:

A. Physical Effort:

  • Must be able to frequently sit in a restricted position for several long periods during a work session.
  • Able to move complex computer equipment, sometimes in confined spaces, and to install or remove delicate hardware components, taking appropriate anti-static precautions.
  • Able to lift medium/heavy QA equipment in order to perform Quality Assurance procedures.
  • Able to stand for long periods of time during patient procedures.
  • Able to respond appropriately when subject to frequent unpredictable working patterns (e.g. when interrupted to provide urgent advice on the processing of data for a particular patient or on abnormal system behavior).
  • Able to concentrate frequently and for prolonged periods (e.g. carrying out computer software development, troubleshooting, installation and testing or a sequence of Quality Assurance measurements).
  • Able to deal with stressful circumstances (e.g. working to restore clinical systems to working order when patients and staff activity has been disrupted).

B. Work Environment:

  • Non-standard working hours.
  • Able to interact with patients and team members from other Departments within the health system.
  • Able to function in an OR setting.
