Southside Medical Center, Inc. (SMC) was founded in 1967 as the Atlanta Southside Comprehensive Health Center. We are a federally qualified health center (FQHC) that provides primary health care and related services to the medically underserved and uninsured.
SMC has 12 locations across the state of Georgia. Our main Center is located near the Georgia State Football Stadium in Fulton County. We also have two other locations in Fulton County: one at Dobbs Elementary School and the other in East Point. We have two locations in Dekalb County on Gresham Road and in Decatur, and three locations in Clayton County in Lovejoy, Riverdale and Forest Park. One location in Gwinnett County in Norcross, and a location in both Spalding and Butts Counties, Duluth and our newest location, Cleveland Avenue Immediate Care in East Point.

Position Summary:

Reports to the LPN Supervisor and Director of Nursing. Supports workflow and documentation for medical record coding. Enters information into the patient’s medical record under the direction and supervision of a physician or licensed practitioner. Scribes also assist the physician or licensed independent practitioner in navigating the EMR and in locating information such as test results and lab results.

Description of Responsibilities:

1. Aides with data acquisition (navigating the EMR) and supports workflow.

2. Scribes follow the physician or licensed independent practitioner and record information into the medical record.

3. The scribe will ensure accurate and comprehensive real-time documentation of the patient- provider interaction which includes; history of present illness, review of systems, past medical history, past surgical history, medications and allergies, social and family history, vital signs, and physical exams.

4. Ensure the appropriate EMR or chart is selected and setup with the most comprehensive set of available objective patient questionnaire; past medical history, vital signs, medication and allergies.

5. Use the facilities’ EMR to obtain and providing accurately and timely updates to patients’ imaging studies and/or laboratory tests with notification to the provider.

6. Assist the physicians with workflow by functioning as a liaison between the provider and the other MA’s.

7. Locate SOAP Template in order to find DX code and be sorted, HPI, ROS, PE, and Assessment/Plan.

8. Access the Assessment/Plan area to order labs, diagnostic studies, document impression, pt. details, and provider details.

9. Calculate E&M Coding before the provider submits coding.

10. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Responsibilities:

  • Has the ability to relate to the health needs of the client.
  • Has the ability to read and understand health care charting and medical procedures.
  • Must have the ability to provide care, patience, and understanding.
  • Has the ability to effectively communicate.
  • Able to perform basic health care procedures that relates to patient care needs according to nursing skill checklist.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School education or equivalent, accredited Medical Assistant Course and/or 1-2 years of experience in a health care setting and certified by American Association of Medical Assistants. Must maintain certification by either re-examination or continuing education credit (CEU). CEU are obtained by attending AAMA approved programs.

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Involves standing and walking. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires normal visual acuity and hearing. Requires exposure communicable disease or bodily fluids.

Typical Working Conditions:

Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medicinal preparations and/or other conditions common to a clinic environment.
