Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a temporary full-time Meter Reader to join our Meter Reading department. This position reads and enters electric, gas, water, and communications meter readings on a micro-processing unit for billing purposes; records conditions that should be brought to the attention of the Meter Reading Supervisor.

Compensation & Benefits

• CFU offers on-the-job training and will enroll employees into a 3-step apprenticeship program, consisting of field training.
  
• Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Full position rate is $32.56/hour once a candidate can successfully perform the essential job functions.
  
• First shift work schedule is 7:30AM-4:00PM with a half hour unpaid lunch period.

• Reads utility meter routes as assigned; Verifies that the reading is both logical and accurate; Reports any account that appears to have changed such that it would affect the customer’s rate schedule; Verifies that meter number and any multiplier listed on the meter is also listed in the route data.

• Answers routine customer questions and refers the customer to proper staff for any questions not easily answered;

• Observes and reports any evidence of meter tampering or other metering and customer concerns to the Supervisor;

• Verifies the accuracy of remote reading devices as scheduled by the Supervisor;

• Assists in obtaining meter readings for check reads and finals, and the posting of collection notices as assigned;
• 
  Notifies appropriate personnel of any hazardous and dangerous situations affecting customer or employee safety and/or utility equipment;
  
• Performs miscellaneous assignments, when the CFU customer meter reading requirements have been satisfied;
  
• Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, co-workers and management.

• High School diploma or equivalent.

• Must have and maintain a valid Iowa driver's license to perform essential job functions and meet CFU insurability guidelines.

• Knowledge of Cedar Falls Street locations.
• Ability to operate a micro-processing unit for the purposes of reading meters;
• Ability to walk meter reading routes and gain access to areas to obtain customer meter readings;
• Ability to maintain a friendly, helpful attitude to all customers and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee must occasionally lift at least 25 pounds, be alert to ergonomic hazards and possess the capability to climb ladders and/or stairs. The employee must also be capable of working in conditions with rough terrain, awkward/difficult positions and walking long distances in inclement weather. This job requires a high activity level.
