The National Director role is a field-based, non-promotional medical and scientific leadership role, responsible for leading a national disease area field medical team comprised of medical science liaisons (MSLs), regional director of MSL(s) (RDM), and Director of Strategy and Communications (DSC). The National Director is responsible for developing the national disease area field medical strategy for their team, that is aligned to the overarching Medical Strategy, and is accountable for delivering impact and improving patient care. The National Director is accountable for successful execution of their team’s field medical strategic plan, providing inspirational leadership and direction of customer engagement tactics that align to business and customer needs, while functioning within the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance polices and Working Practice Documents. The National Director is also responsible for developing organizational talent for future leadership positions.

Your Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Translate Medical Team strategies and actionable customer insights into field medical initiatives and ensure successful execution of such initiatives by working with relevant internal stakeholders (i.e., Medical Team Head, Product Strategy Team, Pharma and Oncology Field Medical Leadership, etc.).
  • Interpret and infuse actionable customer insights from Field Medical Team into other relevant disease area and/or product strategies and plans (i.e., Integrated Product Strategy, Medical Product Plans, etc.).
  • Define external stakeholder mapping and engagement strategy, incorporating novel approaches to partnerships, for the Medical Team’s portfolio of medicines in collaboration with relevant internal stakeholders (i.e., Integrated Product Strategy Team, Medical Strategy Tactical Team, etc.).
  • Develop and ensure execution of Field Medical component in product launch plans, and plans spanning product life cycle, that contribute to pre-launch & launch excellence.
  • Drive new/future-focused approaches and/or ways of working with Field Medical Team.
  • In partnership with Field and Medical Affairs leadership, define, measure, track field medical impact needed to ensure maximal performance/impact of the field medical team to achieve desired regional and national business outcomes. Continue to adjust strategy/tactics to drive desired impact.
  • In partnership with the Director, Strategy and Communications, develop the Field Medical component of Medical Unit Congress Strategy Plans:
a. Determine Field Medical coverage needed for congresses in collaboration with Medical Unit Leadership
b. Define deliverables in partnership with Medical Unit Leadership
c. Attend national and international meetings for scientific content as well as customer management
  • In partnership with the Director, Content Strategy & Training, own the communication and therapeutic training plans for field medical aligned with Medical Unit strategy:
a. Communicate the disease area and product strategies and related tactics to the field medical team
b. Ensure timely dissemination of information on new trials and clinical data to the field medical team
c. Accountable for a therapeutic training plan to maintain scientific excellence of Field Medical associates
  • Develop the Field Medical Team’s Trial support plan for priority trials via active partnership with relevant internal stakeholders (i.e., Global Drug Development, Clinical Operations, Medical Affairs leadership), driving optimal execution of that plan by developing and tracking impact measures of success.
  • Drive compliant Medical/Commercial co-leadership and strong compliant and strategic partnerships and alignment across functions (i.e., Commercial, PSS, Clin Ops, TMO, etc.).
  • Establish and contribute to a positive team culture; provide coaching and talent development of direct reports and of entire field medical unit through development discussions and assessments, focused on developing organizational talent for future leadership positions and retention of top talent.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between: $245,600 - $368,400 / year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.

Minimum requirements

Education:
Advanced scientific or healthcare degree required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PharmD, PhD, DNP, etc)
Experience:
  • Minimum 10 years in pharmaceutical industry with roles of increasing complexity and responsibility required. Field-based medical role preferred
  • Experience managing and developing high performing team(s) required, previous management experience of field-based associates preferred
  • Knowledge of clinical medicine, disease management, and medical research practices strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Field Medical Teams and operations and having had experience in multiple disease areas, strongly preferred.
  • Must possess a thorough understanding of the FDA, OIG, HIPAA, PhRMA Code and other ethical guidelines relevant to the pharmaceutical industry, to ensure compliance with these external as well as internal guidelines and standard operating procedures
Technical Skills/Knowledge:
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Apple device operation, digital tools / platforms, virtual engagement platforms and associated hardware is required Leadership,
Organizational, and Communication Skills:
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, networking, collaboration and influencing skills and demonstrated teamwork (ability to lead a scientific team across a geographical area), are required
  • Must have personal integrity, be a strong team player who can effectively work cross-functionally in a matrixed environment, including collaboration with clinical and commercial personnel and ability to interact effectively with senior leaders
  • A demonstrated ability to effectively lead, direct, coach, manage issues, and resolve conflicts for scientific/medical colleagues at all skill and knowledge levels is essential.
  • Strong business acumen and strategic mindset with demonstrated ability to navigate a complex healthcare landscape, analyze, interpret, and communicate information (e.g., scientific data, competitor landscape, business/market data) effectively and in a timely fashion to relevant internal colleagues
  • Must be a strong team player who can effectively work cross-functionally in a matrixed environment, including collaboration with clinical and commercial personnel as necessary
  • Adept at project & time management, having strong prioritization and organizational skills with ability to effectively plan and pull through complex projects involving multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Field Medical Team(s), cross-functional team(s) and influence internal partners to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback, to plan both strategy and implementation, and to work effectively cross-functionally.
