Job Summary
Physical Sciences Laboratories (PSL) has more than 100 specialized laboratories used to test, analyze, and troubleshoot virtually every aspect of rocket and satellite system design, development, construction, deployment, and operation. The diverse expertise of the laboratories’ technical staff allows PSL to stay abreast of new technological developments and program support issues associated with rapidly evolving space systems.

The Microelectronics Technology Department (MTD) conducts basic and applied research in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices for space applications and provides technical support to national security space programs in these areas. The MTD is seeking a Senior Member of Technical Staff to support investigations of microelectronics reliability and physics of failure by x-ray tomography and other non-destructive techniques. This is a full-time position based in El Segundo, CA, with a hybrid work model that combines regular onsite laboratory work and remote flexibility.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • You will serve National Space Security programs by providing x-ray imaging for failure analysis in microelectronics
  • Develop advanced capabilities for x-ray imaging, tomogram reconstruction, and x-ray materials analysis
  • Apply and develop software tools for data analysis of x-ray images and computed tomography data sets and other large datasets to enhance perceptivity of failures and anomalies in materials and devices
  • Create formal reliability assessments for internal and external customers
  • Work with internal and external scientists to apply x-ray imaging and tomography to problems in various technologies including batteries, solar cells, structural materials and composites, and additive manufactured metals
This position is available as a Senior Member of Technical Staff or a Research Scientist

What You Need to be Successful
Minimum Requirements:
Senior Member of Technical Staff
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or material science or equivalent is required
  • Typically, 5 years experience in a microelectronics-related industry or applicable professional or educational experience is required
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively convey technical information to non-technical personnel via oral and written forms
  • Understanding of materials and device characterization techniques including (but not limited to) x-ray computed tomography and scanning electron microscopy
  • Proficient in MATLAB, C/C++, and/or Python
  • This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.
Research Scientist
Same requirements as a Senior Member of Technical Staff noted above, in addition to:
  • Typically, 8 years experience in a microelectronics-related industry or applicable professional or educational experience is required

How You Can Stand Out
It would be impressive if you have one or more of these:
Senior Member of Technical Staff or Research Scientist
  • PhD in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, or material science is preferred
  • Knowledge of electronic device packaging and fabrication is highly desirable
  • In depth knowledge of integrated circuits, semiconductor physics, and electronics packaging
  • Understanding of microanalysis techniques including scanning electron microscopy, focused ion beam imaging and processing, and atomic force microscopy and other techniques that produce large amounts of image data is highly preferred
