What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Operations Support Specialist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Operations Support Specialist 2 ($65,700-$104,400)

The Utilities & Infrastructure (UI) Division is looking for an enthusiastic, responsible candidate with strong communication skills to support the Transportation & Sustainability programs. The UI Division is responsible for maintaining and operating all the Laboratory's utility systems including, electric, gas, sewer, steam, and water. In addition, UI maintains and manages all the open space on site, including roads and grounds, and the Laboratory's Transportation and Sustainability Programs. The selected candidate will become a Mobility Specialist and subject matter expert to support the Division's Transportation Program. In addition, the selected candidate may assist with additional administrative duties when needed such as procurement and other assignments that contribute to the organization's goals and objectives.

The selected candidate will report to the Operations Support & Improvement (OSI) Group Leader within the division. The selected candidate will be mentored by an experienced Transportation Director and Operations Manager. After learning about the Mobility Specialist role, the candidate will be trained to do the following tasks:
  • Monitor and evaluate internal and external transit ridership
  • Manage the distribution of incentives to Lab employees to encourage alternative transportation use
  • Assist employees with planning transit trips and finding carpool matches
  • Coordinate with carpool and vanpool vendors to provide data and schedule group presentations
  • Research and develop program procedures to launch a new Guaranteed Ride Home Program
  • Assist project managers to operate and maintain the electrical vehicle charging program
  • Maintain Lab parking inventory and manage the distribution of parking permits to include special HOV, EV, and GOV allocated spaces
  • Manage the Bike Parking Program to include the inventory, distribution, and expansion of bike racks, bike lockers, and group bike parking stations; work with project managers to operate the e-bike share pilot.
  • Coordinate with vendors to execute agreements, process invoices, and ensure contract obligations are being met
  • Organize and summarize program trends and issues; develop and maintain spreadsheets and databases, prepare reports using tables, charts, and graphs

Operations Support Specialist 3 ($79,200 - $129,000)
  • In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the selected candidate will identify potential project risks, work to resolve using mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and make decisions with limited direction to successfully execute projects. In addition, the higher-level candidate will mentor lower level staff, manage program procedures, and assist with budget management.

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and listening skills
  • Ability to investigate alternative solutions and recommend solutions to problems
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Able to produce graphs and charts.
  • Proven experience working in an office environment with team-members and customers to solve problems

Additional Job Requirements for Level 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, desired qualifications at the higher level:
  • Experience supervising and/or coordinating work on projects in an office environment
  • Customer Service experience or managing expectations within an office setting
  • Experience developing standard operating procedures
  • Experience with working on budget for projects or programs

Education/Experience for Level 2 : Position requires an Associate's Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 4 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the required job knowledge.

Education/Experience for Level 3 : Position requires an Bacholor Degree in a relevant field from an accredited institution and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the required job knowledge.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Customer service experience or demonstrated knowledge of customer service skills
  • Experience with the Laboratory's procurement tools
  • Understanding of work hazards, safety practices, and problems affecting utility operations

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM. with the potential for a hybrid work arrangement (partially onsite/partially offsite) from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Hybrid is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

This position does not require a Q, but requires the ability to obtain a Q

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
