Job description
The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) uses ophthalmic techniques to perform preliminary work-ups for patients of the Beaumont Eye Institute physicians. Coordinates patient appointments with BEI clerical staff and assists in genereal clinic support for the Eye Clinic and Low Vision Department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Obtains medical/ophthalmological history from each patient.
2. Performs ophthalmic and ocular measurements (including manifest refractions)
3. Consults with Medical and technical personnel as needed.
4. Assists physicians with minor surgical procedures, medical lasers and in refractive surgery.
5. Performs diagnostic procedures as directed by physician including: visual fields, ultrasounds and color testing.
6. Provides instruction to patient and family members
7. Monitors exam rooms and supplies, orders needed supplies and equipment.
8. Maintains ophthalmic equipment
9. Plans and coordinates maintenance in collaboration with supervisor, medical and technical staff.

A. Education / Training:
- High School Diploma
B. Work Experience:
- 6-18 months experience as COA preferred.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- JCAHPO Certification required.
D. Other Qualifications:
- Technical & Surgical Skills.
- Certified refractive surgical LASIK assistant.
- Surgical Boarding.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
A. Physical Effort:
- Minor lifting, walking, bending, standing for refractive surgery.
B. Work Environment:
- Clinical setting, Medical office, Refractive surgical suite, Medical lasers and minor procedure room.
