Lockheed Martin's Missiles and Fire Control business area is an exciting place to work, and a rewarding place grow your career. We are looking to hire an Optical Design Engineer at our campus in Orlando, FL.
  • In this exciting role the Engineer will have the opportunity to perform optical design trade studies, optical material and coating selection and design, and develop an optical prescriptions for missile seekers and Fire Control Systems.
  • The engineer will have the opportunity to coordinate with EO/IR System engineer, mechanical engineering, structural analyst, and thermal analysts on the optical system design .

  • The engineer will also perform design trades and develop the optical design for the seeker or fire control system

  • The engineer will have the opportunity to support multiple programs through design, development, and test phases

  • The engineer may also provide analysis to support optical requirements flow-down and tolerance and environmental effects on optical system performance.

  • The engineer will have the opportunity to support stray light analysis.

  • The engineer will review mechanical drawings.

  • The engineer will have the opportunity to develop bore-sighting / alignment concepts, alignment procedures, and special test tools as necessary.

  • The ideal candidate will have proficiency with standard toolsets for optical design and analysis required such as Code V, Zemax, and FRED.

  • The engineer will have the opportunity to work on and collaborate with cross functional teams with other engineering disciplines.

Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Universal Studios Florida, and SeaWorld. Orlando is also home to the second largest University in the US, the University of Central Florida (UCF). Where can you get to from Orlando? Orlando is about an hour's drive from Cocoa Beach and the "space coast" to include NASA and the Kennedy Space Center. Tampa is about 1.5 hours from Orlando. West Palm Beach is about 2.5 hours to the south and Jacksonville is about 2 hours to the northeast. Atlanta, GA is 6 hours to the northwest.

Basic Qualifications:
  • A degree in Optical Engineering or Physics with a concentration in optical engineering from an accredited college or university with less than 2 years of professional experience
Desired Skills:
  • College lab experience with lens and optical system testing (interferometry, MTF, Ensquared energy, etc.)

  • Exposure to geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT) concepts and drawing standards

  • Proficiency with standard optical design and analysis toolsets such as Code V or Zemax, and/or FRED.

  • Optical design experience with infrared optical materials

  • Experience with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GDT) and drawing standards

  • Experience working in cross functional teams with opto-mechanical, electro-optical, thermal, and structural engineering

  • Familiarity with straylight mitigation concepts

  • Familiarity with radiometry, atmospheric transmission, and target signatures
