For more than 50 years, Northwest Behavioral Health has provided mental health treatment to individuals from Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Colorado. Located on the campus of Northwest Texas Healthcare System in Amarillo, Texas, we offer behavioral health treatment services for children, adolescents, adults, seniors and uniformed service members. Our facility has 6 inpatient units with 106 beds. Additional services we offer include 24 hours a day free behavioral health assessments, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient mental health and substance use programs, clinic-based psychiatry and therapy services. In 2021 additional services added include ECT, virtual reality exposure therapy, bio neurofeedback and CBT-I for insomnia. Position: Paramedic - ER Mental Health (FT variable days & nights)

POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the direct and indirect care of patients under the supervision of the Charge Nurse. Under the direction of a health care practitioner, the Paramedic provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes patient care/observation, specified treatments and procedures; provision of environmental and personal safety, and effective communication. The Paramedic will also be responsible to collect pertinent data within their certification scope of responsibilities and report these clinical, psychosocial, etc., findings to the RN or medical provider and charts appropriately. Works in collaboration with RNs and Medical Providers to provide patient care utilizing advanced skills and judgment. Paramedics will be responsible for ECG interpretation, IV therapy, and initiation of approved protocol orders and guidelines of patients in the setting. Demonstrates Service Excellence at all times.

Provision of Services / Care Standards
  • Provides quality care to patients of all ages under the direction of the Medical Provider in accordance with the philosophy, goals and objects Northwest Texas Healthcare System
  • Reports to the Charge Nurse for shift assignments and direction of shift duties as assigned
  • Is responsible for the direct and indirect care of patients under the supervision of the Medical Provider and Charge Nurse
  • Provides patient care within a defined scope of practice that includes patient care/observation, specified treatment and procedures, provision of environmental and personal safety, and effective communication
  • Collects pertinent data within their certification scope of responsibilities and report these clinical, psychosocial, etc, findings to the RN or Medical Provider and charts appropriately
  • Works in collaboration with RNs and Medical Providers to provide patient care to adult medical and trauma patients utilizing advanced skills and judgement
  • Is responsible for ECG interpretation, IV therapy, and initiation of approved protocol orders and guidelines of patients in the Behavioral Health setting

Qualifications

Education, Training, Experience and Licenses/Registrations Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of an accredited school of paramedicine
  • BLS from the American Heart Association (or obtained during orientation) and maintain certification throughout employment
  • Handle With Care within 90 days of hire and maintain certification throughout employment
  • One year experience in a hospital setting as a Paramedic, preferred

Physical and Sensory Requirements:
  • Ability to read, write and converse in English
  • Ability to communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors and others
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions
  • Ability to bend, lift (minimum of 25 pounds), grasp, fine hand coordination, push, pull, prolonged stand and/or sitting
  • Quantitative/mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, standard/metric measurements)
  • Exposure to infectious organisms, agent, and toxic chemicals
