New Alternatives Transitional Housing Program-Plus is a participant-driven community housing program geared at combating homelessness through supporting youth in their goals to attain skills, employment experience and education as they journey toward independent living. The parent educator is a master’s level position: the primary role of the parent educator is to provide treatment planning and consistent education, guidance and support for parenting youth in the program and their identified supports. The parent educator oversees the safety and basic needs of young families in NA-THP+ through team planning to address individualized personal, interpersonal, family and educational tasks.

New Alternatives, Inc. falls under the California Public Health Order and is additionally required by our county contract to ensure that all employees are vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19.

With the collaboration of other support team members, including but not limited to Program Manager, Job Developer, and case managers, implement a team based approach to support assigned participants in prioritizing child wellness as they meet program requirements for safe housing, productivity, financial management, and independently addressing medical and mental health needs.

Maintain WEEKLY contact (via phone or in person meetings) with parenting participants to create and implement a plan to address individualized goals and personal, family and educational tasks for each of the following 6 areas:

1.) Self Care

2.) Child and Family Safety

3.) Positive Discipline and Authoritative Parenting for Developmental Stages

4.) Relationships (Parent-Child and Adult-Adult)

5.) Nutrition and Exercise

6.) Managing Family Future

Log and report to case managers monthly parenting credits earned towards approved family needs (up to 60 earned through attendance at and appropriate participation in parenting group (10 credits/Group), follow through with weekly meetings either in person or via phone (10 credits/Group), and evidence of addressing family or educational tasks related to parent plan (10 credits/TASK)

Meet with expectant parents for support around family planning and pregnancy options and ensure that all appropriate referrals have been made (doctor, nutritionist, Nurse Family Partnership).

As possible, plan and oversee group outings in the community as a means to provide creative, educational outlets and non-directive parent-child activities.

Run a bi-monthly mutual aid parenting group for all parenting participants. Schedule guest speakers as possible to augment the curriculum.

The parent educator will maintain working relationships with all THP+ staff and keep appropriate staff updated on participant’s needs, progress and goals.

Job Duties Include:

  • Maintain collateral contacts and working lists of mental health referrals and services (family, ILS, CASA, former/current social workers, outpatient therapist/psychiatrist, Medi-Cal, EOPS/School, parenting resources, substance abuse programs, DV shelters/services and mutual aid groups)
  • Complete individualized assessment and treatment plan (updated monthly to include target goal and suggested interventions) and provide team members with progress updates on a weekly basis in the interest of feedback and collaborative treatment planning.
  • Model professional boundaries and professional use of self/resources (e.g. non-labeling language, client confidentiality with other clients, personal disclosure as it relates to client goals).
  • Provide in-service training to staff and psycho-education to participants as needed on developmental tasks and relationship challenges, including domestic violence/healthy relationships, drug use/abuse, gender roles, and self care/coping.
  • Utilize a Harm Reduction approach designed to non-judgmentally address client’s choices in terms of the function of their behavior in their environment.
  • Implement Coaching skills (listening, inquiring, feedback and sharing) to achieve the following with each participant: a.) clear expectations, b.) praise/appreciative and developmental feedback, and c.) reflection and evaluation. Utilize coaching framework of belief in client’s capacity, trust building and connectivity to create accountability, develop solutions, identify goals, and clarify focus.
  • Utilize Motivational Interviewing Techniques within Positive Youth Development framework.
  • The parent educator is responsible for maintaining paperwork and participant tracking as follows: note for every face to face meeting, daily contact notes as needed, ETO online tracking system to document every contact.
  • The Parent Educator will attend staff meetings and trainings as needed weekly. Meetings include but are not limited to Tuesday team meeting and bi-monthly Case Consult, Topic Specific Trainings within the program, and Community Facilitated Trainings.
