Job description
Marin Academy seeks to appoint a Penn Teaching Fellow in history (starting in June) for the
2023–2024 school year. The Independent School Teaching Residency program is a master’s degree
program run by the University of Pennsylvania. Enrolled students commit to a two-year teaching
fellowship, teaching a reduced load (two classes for the first year and two or three in the second) in
addition to completing online and in-person courses. Fellows will not only gain real-world, hands-on
experience at Marin Academy, they will also—upon successful completion of the program—earn a
master’s degree in education from the University of Pennsylvania.
Accepted Fellows will benefit from the guidance and mentorship of veteran faculty members at
Marin Academy and will be involved fully in the life of the school. In addition to teaching, Fellows
will have the opportunity to advise, coach, and/or sponsor student clubs/organizations. Fellows will
also run a minicourse, facilitate our End-of-Year programming, and completed one full service to the
school. Fellows will also participate in regular seminars dedicated to the exploration of critical issues
in education in addition to completing their coursework at Penn. You can find more information
about the program here.
Marin Academy fellows will receive housing and/or a housing stipend, full medical, dental, vision,
and retirement benefits, 80% of the tuition for the University of Pennsylvania, and breakfast and
lunch every day that school is in session. In addition, fellows can expect to earn between
$35,000-$45,000.
The MA History Department values a student-centered, inquiry-based approach to teaching that
balances content mastery with an emphasis on skill development. Students at Marin Academy are
required to take three years of history including Modern World History I, Modern World History II,
and United States History. The school also offers a rich variety of history and humanities elective
courses for seniors. While these elective courses vary from year to year, offerings in 2022-2023
include: “The Art and History of Black Liberation,” “Justice in America,” “Islam, Islamophobia, and
Military Intervention in the Arab World,” “International Relations,” and “World Empires.”
At Marin Academy, we believe equity and inclusion are at the core of our mission, which calls on us
“to think, question, and create in an environment of encouragement and compassion.” In
challenging us “to accept the responsibilities posed by education in a democratic society,” the MA
community seeks to envision and manifest a more just world and to actively grapple with the
inequitable systems and structures that persist around us. These values are embedded in our
teaching and learning. At MA, we recognize that creating an inclusive school is not a one-time
act—it’s an ongoing process that requires continual attention and evolution. While we work to
represent diverse voices within the curriculum, we also engage in reimagining our practices and
culture to consider students’ lived experiences and needs.
At present, MA is deeply engaged in the work outlined in our ambitious strategic plan which
emphasizes interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching and learning, competency-based
assessment, and equity and inclusion. Candidates eager to work toward these strategic goals will be
prioritized in our search progress. Furthermore, we welcome candidates who are eager to grow in
their professional lives and who demonstrate a willingness and an ability to engage in reflection on
their practice.
The school is a vibrant and increasingly diverse community, and students and teachers alike continue
to work towards the furthering of an inclusive and supportive school. Marin Academy is an equal
opportunity employer committed to excellence through diversity, and people of color and women
are encouraged to apply.
