Job description
The Personal Lines Underwriter evaluates and analyzes personal lines accounts with a focus on renewal business. The ideal candidate has at least two years of experience in personal lines underwriting who is interested in working toward their CPCU in the future. In this position, you will make decisions that adhere to the company’s underwriting criteria and support organizational growth and business objectives. This is a perfect opportunity for someone with a strong ability to build agency relationships, make timely and appropriate decisions, and provide excellent service to our customers.
After the initial training period, this position may have a hybrid schedule with at least 50% of the time in the office.
The full hiring range for this role is: $55,300-$83,000 annually; however, the base pay offered may vary depending on the job-related knowledge, skills, credentials, and experience of each candidate as well as other factors such as the scope and location of the role. Candidates outside of the range listed above are encouraged to apply and will be considered based upon their individual qualifications and/or may be considered for other positions.
- Develops and manages a personal lines book of business within assigned territory to meet organizational objectives for growth, retention, and profitability.
- Uses established practices, procedures, and authority level to issue, modify, and renew policies.
- Evaluates risk characteristics and analyzes historic and potential account performance to make sound underwriting decisions.
- Makes decisions with efficiency, speed, and accuracy.
- Applies knowledge and judgement to help solve problems of various scope and complexity.
- Communicates with internal Personal Lines department members, other Western National departments, and external parties frequently.
- Builds and maintains strong agency relationships.
- Consistently acts according to our customer experience standards including responding quickly, maintaining a positive attitude, building rapport, and demonstrating empathy.
- Manages customer expectations using the proper communication channel for the situation and taking ownership to ensure the customer’s issue is resolved.
- Performs special projects and other duties as assigned.
- At least 2 years of property-and-casualty underwriting or 5 years of agency experience with a strong focus on personal lines.
- Strong understanding of industry practices, standards, and underwriting concepts.
- Understands personal lines products, coverages, rating methodology, systems, and marketplace.
- Able to multitask, manage time effectively, and solve problems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong negotiation and relationship building skills.
- Analytical with ability to exercise sound business judgment.
- Proficient use of various core systems, office and computer equipment, and software packages.
- Interested in working toward future CPCU, AU or CIC certification.
- Bachelor’s degree in insurance or finance or equivalent experience.
