DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Bell’s Philanthropy Officer (PO) is responsible for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors at $5,000+ and leadership donors at $50,000+ of lifetime cumulative giving. This is a full-time position.
Working in conjunction with the Executive Director, Director of Finance, Director of Community Engagement, and the Board of Directors, the PO is responsible for the overall agency effort to identify, research, and successfully obtain major gifts and grants to provide supplemental funds for agency operations and develop endowments to provide for the agency’s future financial needs.
PO KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Cultivation and Stewardship In close collaboration with the Executive Director and Board members, this position will manage the implementation of cultivation and stewardship plans for the agency’s prospects and donors. This activity will include participating in major and leadership donor events and site tours, preparing written materials, ensuring timely acknowledgements, and engaging/guiding other staff and board volunteers in their stewardship roles.
Solicitation The PO will personally solicit major donors through face-to-face visits and written proposals, including partnering with board members, community members, program staff or executive staff as appropriate. They will actively manage and document relationships, proposal status, actions and notes to assure accurate, timely and consistent donor engagement and communications.
Prospect Identification and Discovery The PO will identify donors and prospects with additional interest and capacity, including stewarding annual fund donors to become major donors, and major donors to become leadership donors. They will identify direct avenues to reach out to current prospective donors and will conduct discovery visits with donor prospects.
Research/Community Collaboration – The PO will research opportunities via existing and new funding sources to procure grants, staying up to date with funding opportunities available locally, statewide and nationally. Utilizing internet and community resources (i.e., grant library) and education on funding/service trends is required. A working knowledge of the agency’s existing funders (MH/IDD, OVR, PROMISE, CCBHO, United Way, and HUD/CoC) is helpful.
Capital Campaigns, Endowment, and Planned Giving – The PO will direct any capital campaigns or other major fundraising drives in coordination with the Executive Director and Director of Community Engagement. They will also lead efforts to increase the agency’s endowment funds, and work alongside the Director of Community Engagement to manage the agency’s planned giving program (Leave a Legacy).
CRITICAL ELEMENTS:
1. Leading efforts of the Board of Directors and Executive Director to plan and execute strategies for major donor cultivation, stewardship, and solicitation.
2. Managing a personal portfolio of major donor individuals and corporations to strategically and sustainably increase their support.
3. Researching and working with Bell’s service department leaders to write and submit grant proposals to foundations and corporations; following grant tracking and reporting requirements.
4. Gauging progress toward the agency’s financial goals with monthly and annual reporting.
5. Skillfully representing Bell Socialization Services to various constituencies
ADDITIONAL ELEMENTS:
A successful candidate will have a background in creating and implementing development strategies within the nonprofit organizational structure, will be comfortable in a leadership role, have superb prioritization and time management skills, exceptional oral and written communication skills, and maintain a creative, self-starter attitude.
1. Preferred experienced in one or more areas: major gift development, grant writing, corporate fundraising.
2. Excellent writing skills for development materials, grant applications and marketing communications.
3. Excellent organizational skills.
4. Ability to work independently and as a team.
5. Ability to successfully manage multiple deadlines.
6. Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism.

9. Intermediate-to-strong technology skills including Internet usage, databases, social media, Microsoft Office, etc.
10. Knowledge of York/Adams County’s community needs – particularly as related to mental health, intellectual and development disabilities, affordable housing and homelessness.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college/university (nonprofit management, communications/journalism, public relations, business, philanthropic studies, etc.) or five to ten years directly related fundraising experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience. CRFE designation/current AFP membership a plus. Experience cultivating and closing gifts of $10K or more preferred. Must be at least 21 years old, possess valid driver’s license, insurable driving record, and have reliable transportation. PA State Police background check. E.O.E
