What You Will Do:
JOB SUMMARY: This role performs capillary and venous blood collection with few uncollected specimens, unacceptable specimens, or requests for assistance. This position processes specimens using computers and/or manual systems following established procedures, and performs clerical and receptionist duties as needed. This position will perform point of care testing under the administrative supervision of the Anticoagulation Manager with technical supervision of the Laboratory Point of Care Coordinator (LPOCC). This testing will be performed in accordance with established Laboratory quality control protocols as well as strict adherence to manufacturer procedure. Interacts with patient populations from neonate to geriatric. May provide coverage with Laboratory Services.
What You Need to Be Successful:
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Education & Training: Completion of a structured phlebotomy course that included a minimum of 40 hours of didactic and 80 clinical hours in a laboratory/hospital setting. One may substitute this with one year full time equivalent phlebotomy experience in a laboratory/hospital setting or a UM UCH approved training program with documentation of competency. Satisfactory annual competency for point of care testing will be required. Competency will be provided and maintained by the LPOCC. Work Orientation & Experience: One (1) year of full-time experience in laboratory/hospital setting is required. Skills & Abilities: Visual acuity and manual dexterity are required. Ability to: (a) obtain venous and capillary blood specimens in as painless a manner as possible; (b) respond to emergency situations appropriately. (c) relate positively with and reassure patients; (d) communicate effectively with patients, physicians and other hospital team members; (e) maintain discretion with patients; (f) organize and manage time effectively setting appropriate priorities; (g) make independent decisions consistent with current policies and procedures, (h) ability to perform point of care testing; (i) project a positive image of the organization in support of Service Excellence expectations; (j) adapt hours and availability to variable and changing needs of the Anticoagulation Clinic, and other locations as necessary; including all shifts; (k) foster a service excellence atmosphere that contributes to a healing and compassionate environment.
