General Job Summary: Responsible for rehabilitating persons with physical disabilities. Assess, plan, organize, and participate in rehabilitative programs that improve mobility, relieve pain, increase strength, and decrease or prevent deformity of patients suffering from disease or injury.
Essential Job Functions:

  • Helps to restore physical function, improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent permanent disability. Assists in restoring, maintaining, and promoting overall fitness and health.
  • Examines patients’ medical histories. Tests and measures patients’ strength, range of motion, balance and coordination, posture, muscle performance, respiration, and motor function.
  • Determines patients’ ability to be independent and reintegrate into the workplace or community after injury or illness.
  • Develops plans describing a treatment strategy, its purposes, and its anticipated outcome. Plan often includes exercise regimens at the clinic and at home to increase flexibility, strength, or endurance. May use modalities to relieve pain and reduce swelling.
  • Teaches patients how to use assistive and adaptive devices such as crutches, prostheses, and wheelchairs.
  • Documents patients’ progress, conducts, periodic examinations, and modifies treatments with emphasis on identification of areas requiring more/less attention.
  • Compliance with Exposure Control Standards/Blood-borne and Air-borne Pathogens. Compliance with OSHA and safety standards of organization.
  • Performs other duties that may be necessary or in the best interest of the department/practice.

Equipment Operated: Often demonstrates and helps patients’ uses assistive and adaptive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and canes. Operates physical therapy equipment such as ultrasound, traction, and electrical stimulation. Standard office equipment including computers/pc, fax machines, copiers, and printers.
Work Environment: Combination of medical office and exam/procedure room settings. Well- lighted, well-ventilated, adequate space. Ability to work in an environment with exposure to potentially dangerous/infectious materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions that may include the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Requirements:

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree in physical therapy from accredited program; successful completion of clinical internships. Experience as a physical therapist in an outpatient setting preferred. Current state license to practice physical therapy. CPR/AED training.
Other Requirements: Schedules will change as department needs change.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of basic science including biology, chemistry, and physics as well as biomechanics, neuroanatomy, and disease manifestations.
  • Knowledge of examination techniques and therapeutic procedures.
  • Knowledge of HIPPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of customer services standards in the healthcare field.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of word processing, computer/pc and internet/email skills.
  • Knowledge and proper use of office equipment.

Skills:

  • Skill in appropriate evaluation and treatment of patients including hands-on procedures.
  • Skill in using physical therapy equipment by consistently using devices appropriately to improve patient health status.
  • Excellent adaptability skills-ability to change as organization and healthcare industry indicates.
  • Use of a scheduling system within practice management software and accuracy in data entry.
  • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills. Can organize and prioritize work, schedules time to accommodate work demands, turnaround time requirements and commitments.
  • Must be able to learn quickly.

Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate interpersonally in order to educate patients about their physical therapy treatments.
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion and desire to help patients.
  • Ability to analyze data and modify treatment plans as appropriate.
  • Ability to organize work environment and work load to meet needs of the organization.
  • Ability to work as a team player (critical in this position).

Mental/Physical Requirements: Often have to stoop, kneel, crouch, lift, and stand for long periods. Frequently move heavy equipment, lift patients or help them turn, stand or walk. Occasionally must be able to lift and carry 50+ pounds. Periodic stress from workload or anxious patients.
