Role Summary

The Principal Cloud Enterprise Systems Engineer is a subject matter expert of Cloud technologies for Alaska Air Group (AAG) and its subsidiaries. As an individual contributor, this role defines long-term strategy for the Cloud Platforms team and exercises considerable latitude and initiative to solve complex problems. They must demonstrate expert skills in driving Cloud adoption strategies using industry standard design principles while ensuring all cloud services at Alaska Air Group are safe, secure and cost-effective.

Key Duties

  • Act as a subject matter expert and enterprise technology thought leader on Cloud platforms.
  • Provide best practices, automation guidelines and systems engineering principles for Azure Infrastructure including the support of products and services such as Azure App Service, RBAC, VMs, Blob Storage, Azure Networking & Content delivery (VNET, NAT, VPN, DNS, Traffic Manager, ExpressRoute, CDN, etc), Resource Groups, Application Insights, Logs, Front Door, and Security.
  • Design and implement innovative solutions for a multi-region, highly available and highly automated Azure environment to support full software development life cycle and production of mission-critical applications
  • Mentor application/system administrators on all elements of application administration, including technical, process, and documentation best practices. Additionally, serves as the point of escalation for other application administrators in the event of severe or critical issues impacting production operations.
  • Provides 24x7 on-call support for critical issues affecting applications/infrastructure.
  • Focused on continuous improvement in system reliability through automation and monitoring.
  • Lead cross divisional enterprise infrastructure projects related to Cloud services.
  • Collaborate directly with Enterprise Architecture and Security to develop and plan the platforms architecture and security strategies.
  • Lead vendor management to better understand future capabilities while advocating for features that are beneficial to Alaska.
  • Act as a forward thinker to help ensure that new capabilities are evaluated, implemented, and operationalized.

Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills

Required:

  • 7 years of experience in IT, or related area.
  • Bachelor’s degree, or an additional two years of relevant training/experience in lieu of this degree.
  • Technical engineering experience required to serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in both cloud infrastructure and application development.
  • Demonstrated expert level experience with Azure and implementing the five pillars of the Azure Well Architected Framework
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and driving a continuous improvement culture within Cloud Center of Excellence team and its partners.
  • Expert knowledge and experience in Infrastructure as Code (ARM, Terraform, PowerShell) and Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (Azure DevOps and/or GitHub preferred)
  • Proven experience in implementing security best practices and tools such as Azure AD, Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Azure Key Vault, Azure Policies, and Identity Platform
  • Demonstrated experience in implementing Cloud cost management strategies, programs, and initiatives
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross functional teams to understand objectives, gather automation requirements, write technical specifications, and perform in a lead role.
  • Experience with Docker, Containers and Kubernetes
  • Experience in Agile (Scrum) or Kanban development methodologies
  • Experience in establishing a continuous improvement plan for Cloud Operations including troubleshooting outages, performing root cause analysis, and executing continual service improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills and a proven ability to collaborate with a variety of team members.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Preferred:

  • Expertise in modernizing highly complex and critical applications to modern cloud architectures
  • Experience developing consumable and repeatable cloud solution.
  • Broad background in technical architecture, application development, middleware, and database management for multiple operating systems or development language/methodologies.
  • Experience producing proofs of concept with different technologies to accurately arrive at the best one for the problem at hand.
  • Professional experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Experience estimating effort and establishing timelines for projects
  • Technology Certifications such as the Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert and Google Cloud Architect
  • Experience in automating operational processes as needed, with accuracy and in compliance with our security requirements, all while ensuring that all meet our customer service standards and reduce errors.
  • Experience conveying knowledge to diverse groups of people, such as classes, brown bag meetings, or seminars to ensure a consistent application of standards is established.
