GENERAL SUMMARY:
Use your improvement skills to help advance the organizational goals here at Brigham Health. This role supports the Process Improvement agenda of Brigham and Women’s Hospital through facilitation of key strategic projects and work teams. Works with the Director, Lead Consultants and Senior Consultants within Process Improvement to provide support to teams through collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data, development of testing and implementation work plans and evaluation of impact. Assists in providing process improvement training for teams. Employs a variety of improvement methodologies including Toyota Production System/Lean, Institute for Healthcare Improvement Rapid Cycle Testing, Innovation/Deep Dive design sessions.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently facilitates project subgroups and work teams including meeting management, discussion facilitation, conflict resolution, one-on-one meetings with clinical and administrative managers and leaders.
- Uses fundamental Process improvement concepts and methodologies such as process/value stream mapping, brainstorming, group decision-making techniques, design and testing of interventions, design of measurement strategies and implementation planning.
- Conducts patient/process “walk-throughs”, face-to-face patient and provider interviews and participates in focus groups.
- Provides data support to project teams: identifies useful sources of data; plans data collection; analyzes, interprets and presents healthcare data.
- Rapidly identifies, problem-solves and communicates to the Director of Process Improvement any issues that are interfering with project deadlines or project scope.
- Participates in teamwork to improve internal operations and customer-facing services.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
SPECIFIC TASKS
PI Project facilitation and management (90%)
- Perform literature search and best practice collection
- Coordinate work with APSI team members (role clarification/ timeline coordination)
- Analyze data
- Design plan and perform observations
- Draft facilitation plans
- Educate team members
- Facilitate project subgroups or department teams at direction of Sr/ Lead consultant
- Return data and information to project leaders and teams; timely
- Provide purpose and/ or proposed agenda for all meetings
- Escalate project impediments to PI Team leader
- Seek support from team and PI Director as needed with 1) interpersonal conflict within project team and 2) response to unexpected or unclear stakeholder actions
- Review, reflect and as agreed with the team, update PI team standard work
- Become expert in use of visual management & standard work
- Participate in daily and weekly scrum activities
PI Coaching and Mentoring for Staff and Leaders (5%)
- Coach front line staff on observation methods and data collection
- Explain purpose of work plan activities to team on demand
- Create content updates
Classroom PI and Change Leadership Teaching (5%)
- Provide examples
- Deliver presentations
- Tally feedback from attendees and submit to primary customer
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s Degree prefered
- Improvement experience and experience facilitating teams; may be evidenced by three or more documented improvement projects
- Three years of work experience
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with patients, healthcare providers and administrators. Must be able to maintain a high degree of maturity, professionalism and confidentiality. Proven ability to manage small projects independently.
- Grasp of key continuous quality improvement concepts, methodologies and tools. Leading candidates will have completed basic Lean, Six Sigma Green Belt or Agile/ Scrum training.
- Ability to complete work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines.
- Previous experience in healthcare improvement preferred.
- Competency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel; competency in Microsoft Access or other database applications preferred.
