JOB OPPORTUNITY/DESCRIPTION
TITLE: R&D / Engineering Technician
LOCATION: Elkhart, IN

REPORTS TO: Benoit Renaud
JOB SUMMARY:
Employee must have high initiative to seek out solutions to processes of manufacturing and building of product. This is a highly flexible role to aid product engineering and assist with new product development. This function is to build and test our products to NMMA / ABYC Standards by developing procedures and equipment for consistency. This will require to set up and run a physical test of the part using NMMA/ABYC requirements and beyond as in cycle testing for approval. Once part is proven to be successful, testing will need to be documented in an appropriate manor. This role will assist the engineering team in the R&D of new product helping to maintain new product to DFM and building proof of concept prototypes. Assisting with boat testing is required. DOT certification to tow boat and Forklift certification will be a requirement. Knowledge of materials and processes used in our boat building are an asset. FRP lamination and repair, wood cutting, aluminum forming and welding, machining, etc.
The position will report to the R&D supervisor/ Engineering manager and will also be expected to work under their own initiative. There is a need for excellent communication and the continued maintenance of relationships with all staff, vendors and customers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Understand ABYC/NMMA requirements.
- Test new product to ensure design will hold up to marine environment. To capture ABYC requirements and cycle testing to ensure longevity of mechanisms as well.
- Set up system to cycle test, includes setting up well engineered reliable automated fixtures. Documenting results in an organized fashion.
- Mocking up designs for proof of concept, Building DV boats, Performance testing.
- Taking initiative to get and provide information to the engineering team to push forward progress on any given project.
- Being proactive to prepare a new staging area for new projects coming in. Tearing down projects once complete and stowing certain items away for future use in a well thought organized manor.
- Must have creativity to see solutions in the development prototype phases to overcome any challenges that may arise.
- Occasionally assist with production when needed.
- Assist in equipment maintenance (Trailers, trucks, machine tools, etc.)
- Instrumental is the 5S activities in the workshop area.
- Follow all safety rules and policies.
- Boat building experience is a plus.
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Associate degree in engineering or experience equivalent
- Marine experience is a plus
- Knowledge of material and processes used in boat building is a plus
