OVERVIEW:

The Recovery Counselor is responsible for providing ethical and professional addiction counseling and case management services to our program participants. The Recovery Counselor collaborates with the counseling and residence operations teams to support all program participants in our care

DUTIES:

COUNSELING & CASE MANAGEMENT:

  • Promote the value of abstinence, harm reduction, positive reinforcement, self-sufficiency, and empowerment with program participants.
  • Develop and document treatment plans with program participants to identify and address their needs, including but not limited to recovery, housing, and physical and mental health.
  • Evaluate program participants’ progress during all phases of the program. Address barriers to program engagement and the achievement of identified goals.
  • Be responsive to being a mandated reporter and report evidence or suspicion of abuse to proper authorities including the direct supervisor.
  • Complete and maintain required client records, files, correspondence, and statistics in a timely, clear, thorough, accurate, articulate, and legible manner.
  • Submit required reports and documentation of services provided to participants, related to treatment and outcome objectives.
  • Create and update discharge and aftercare planning to support ongoing long-term recovery, including referrals to appropriate post-care resources.
  • Proactively link program participants to internal and external resources based on their treatment needs.
  • Inform clients about the grievance process and protocols on release of information and confidentiality.
  • Review and be ready to present the progress of each program participant in weekly case conferences.
  • Participate in scheduled case conference and case review meetings, staff meetings, and trainings.
  • Identify, network, and refer participants to community-based services as appropriate.
  • Represent The Salvation Army Harbor Light Center in the community as needed.
  • Accompany program participants to off-site appointments as needed.
  • Comply with The Salvation Army’s standards of care.
  • Participate in intake and orientation to the program.

SUPPORTING RESIDENCE OPERATIONS TEAM:

  • Ensure clients are dressed appropriately while moving through the facility, are not in restricted areas, and are wearing their identification badge and colored lanyard.
  • According to schedule and as directed, support searches in the residence for contraband including alcohol, drugs, drug paraphernalia, and various other non-permitted items.
  • Follow and reinforce program policies, requirements, and expectations of program participation.
  • Assist with all emergency evacuations to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants.
  • Respond to emergencies that occur in the residence as requested or required.
  • Facilitate Medication Observation according to policies and procedures.
  • Enforce house rules, procedures, and protocols for participants.

GROUP FACILITATION:

Facilitate group counseling sessions as required on withdrawal, recovery, alcohol and drug-free lifestyle, relapse prevention, and related community recovery resources.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

  • Required:
    • Registered and working toward certification or license pursuant to CA Code of Regulations, Title 9 § 13010. Certification preferred.
    • Two years experience in substance abuse and/or mental health counseling.
  • Maintain compliance with the requirements for continuing education hours and/or units (CEH or CEU) as determined by the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs and/or other regulatory agencies.
  • Integrity and ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner. Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task with follow-through.
  • First Aid and CPR certification (within first 14 days of employment - company provided).
  • Tuberculosis clearance (within first 7 days of employment)
  • Ability to be professional, punctual, flexible, and reliable.
  • Must not be on active parole or probation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Detailed and results-oriented.
  • Desired:
    • Experienced working successfully with issues of substance abuse, mental illness, and other potential barriers to self-sufficiency.
    • Knowledge of co-occurring disorders, gender-responsive, and trauma-informed treatment preferred.
    • Culturally competent and able to work with a highly diverse population.
    • Knowledge of clinical documentation.

  • $28/hour if certified
