Refugee Services Housing Specialist
Job description
Under the direction of the Housing and Donations Coordinator, identifies housing for newly arriving refugee households and secondary migrants. Completes required housing-related documentation and services. Supports the development and implementation of housing programming based on client needs. Processes applications for rent and utility assistance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supports the development and implementation of housing arrangements for newly arriving clients which includes both temporary (Airbnb/hotel/host homes) and permanent housing
- Identifies and secures safe and affordable housing for newly arriving refugees and secondary migrants
- Coordinates with team members and volunteers to support housing strategy for temporary and permanent housing
- Communicates with management companies and landlords about housing needs and issues
- Develops and facilitates client housing orientations
- Supports the research and relationship-building with prospective rental properties
- Communicates with team members regarding pre and post arrival housing needs and concerns
- Coordinates all utility set up (electric, gas, internet, and cellphone) and/or transfer to client’s names
- Supports the development and implementation of housing programming based on client needs
- Researches and connects clients to relevant housing resources in the community
- Supports the timely payment of client rent and utility bills
- Addresses client housing concerns
- Participates in community meetings regarding local housing issues
- Participates in staff meetings and all required trainings
- Ensures complete, accurate and timely documentation on housing and utilities for each case file in accordance with grant requirements
- Support clients with filling out rental applications and navigating the US housing systems
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred in a human services, health, or public policy field (social work, human development and family sciences, public health, public policy).
Three or more years of experience in the field of human services and/or working with refugees and migrants preferred, but not required.

Fluent in Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Burmese, Karenni, Somali, French, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Tigrinya, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian and/or Amharic preferred, but not required.
Valid driver’s license, auto insurance and reliable access to a personal vehicle as well as ability to drive agency vehicles required.
Ability to successfully pass a child abuse registry check and criminal background check and requires completion of the Protecting God’s Children VIRTUS training session.
Mature and stable judgment as well as sensitivity to various cultures and the unique history of refugees.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Computer Skills
Demonstrates proficient computer skills and familiarity with commonly used programs. Ability to learn and effectively use various data collection and database management systems to record data as required. Demonstrates familiarity and proficiency with Internet tools and techniques for searching, extracting, and processing information.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs. and be on feet for several hours at a time.
