Job description
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care and handles various tasks associated with the day-to-day clinical operations of the Student Health & Wellness Center in accordance with departmental policies, procedures, and collaboration with a licensed physician. The Registered Nurse promotes health and achievement of patient health goals through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation in patient care delivery. This position may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends for student events and/or to meet business needs. The Registered Nurse will join a medical and mental health professional team whose primary goal is the entire Otis College student community’s overall health and wellness. The Registered Nurse will also participate in SHWC activities, including accreditation, quality improvement, and complies with all SHWC bylaws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. This position reports directly to Student Health Director/Physician.
Location Los Angeles, CA (Westchester) Essential Duties Summary
- Assesses health care needs of student patients through triage. Recognizes changes in the patient’s physical and mental condition, takes appropriate action by notifying the physician, advanced registered nurse practitioner, or counselor.
- Administers medications and obtains specimens using established techniques. Utilizes equipment and technology to implement nursing interventions and/or treatments according to departmental policies and procedures. Performs appropriate procedures independently and assists physician with more complicated procedures. Responds to emergencies using standard emergency protocols and procedures.
- Takes vital signs and pertinent histories for all patients.
- Leads the COVID-19 surveillance testing program and vaccine distribution program, with supervision from the Student Health and Wellness Center Director.
- Follows all nursing protocols, procedures, and standing orders as written by the physician.
- Maintains well‐stocked medical materials and supplies for each exam room. Orders medical equipment, materials, and supplies as needed, including medication. Serves as the point person for various clinical operations (i.e., inventory of all medication in the dispensary, coordinating with vendors regarding laboratory services and medical supplies.) Performs follow‐up action as needed.
- Helps provide health‐related information to students to enhance their understanding of medical conditions and related treatments.
- Prepares patient referrals to outside providers for specialty care directed by the physician or advanced registered nurse practitioner.
- Triages patient phone calls and provides guidance and direction to inquiries per physician‐directed protocols.
- Provides comprehensive medical record documentation that reflects all aspects of care provided during each encounter, including patient history, nursing assessment, medication list, allergy list, treatments and/or procedures, and patient education. Documents data for billing purposes.
- Assists with planning and implementing care designed to meet student health and wellness needs. Participates in monitoring and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of patient care.
- Ensures that exam rooms and treatment areas are supplied and maintained.
- Maintains a safe environment following departmental standards, policies, and safety regulations. Ensures compliance with infection control policies.
- Alerts appropriate personnel for safety, fire, and other unsafe situations. Reports any unusual occurrences to supervisor.
- Performs other related duties as assigned. Must be responsive to work-related phone calls and emails during non-business hours on occasion.
A current and valid California State RN license is required. Current and valid certifications in CPR.
A minimum of 1 year of specialized/technical training in the field of nursing is required. Expert level knowledge of patient care practices and clinical operations is required.

An undergraduate degree in related field is preferred. Two or more years of clinical experience in a college student health center is highly desired. Working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation agency requirements is a plus.
