Overview: Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is recruiting a Registered Nurse-Phone Triage. Responsible for providing professional nursing care to patients via telephonic assessment and triage. Works collaboratively with physicians and other health care workers to provide ambulatory patient care and to facilitate medical education.

Responsibilities:

  • Refers abnormal lab work to physician for appropriate follow up.
  • Calls in prescription refills.
  • Facilitates the education of residents, medical students and other health care disciplines.
  • Discuss day to day issues with team leader for resolution.
  • Availability to work occasional overtime on weekends or evenings to complete time sensitive projects.
  • Acquires knowledge for new technology and policy/procedure revisions.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Specific clinic nurse responsibilities:

  • Provides care for all nurse visits and provides initial data gathering for all post hospital discharge visits.
  • Receives and manages verbal and telephone orders.
  • Initiates and/or oversees all intravenous medications/fluids.
  • Precepts students from schools of nursing as designated in established contracts.
  • Provides nursing leadership and knowledge in emergency care situations.
  • Assists other team members in resolving patient care problems, supplementing patient teaching regarding medication, healthcare issues and available resources.
  • Directs patient flow and room assignments.
  • Collects patient information pertinent to physician visit or procedure.
  • Assists physicians and team with treatment, tests, and orders.
  • Performs waived testing.
  • Administers ordered medication as approved.
  • Documents patient care and actions per clinic standard.

Specific phone triage responsibilities:

  • Utilizes age specific protocol manuals designed for patient assessment.
  • Performs telephonic patient assessment for all ages.
  • Documents call processing in the EMR and/or paper medical record.
  • Schedules urgent appointments and extended hours clinic appointments; may make or direct other appointments; all in accordance with scheduling guidelines.
  • Assists in continuity of patient care by proper transfer of patient information.
  • Participates in the revision and maintenance of protocol manuals and clinic specific scheduling guidelines.

Qualifications:

  • Two years’ experience in healthcare setting.
  • Two years’ experience in phone triage for telephonic position required, three years’ experience preferred.
  • Current Michigan license.
  • Knowledge and ability to use the electronic medical record (EMR).
  • Knowledge of phone system.
  • BCLS certification.
  • Working knowledge of basic word processing.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Outlook messaging, appointment scheduling and the calendar.
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of work flow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with a minimal need for direct supervision.
