JOB TITLE: Registered Nurse

GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Depending upon the assignment, the registered nurse will be responsible for either admitting the patient to the center or recovering the patient post procedure.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Directly supervised by the charge nurse, reports to the nurse manager.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but not limited to:

The duties and responsibilities of the Registered Nurse include, but are not limited to:

A. Admitting Role

a. Identify self to patient and family and assures the correct identity of patient.

b. Follows standing pre operative orders.

c. Checks patient vital signs and completes pre procedure assessment.

d. Offers emotional support to patients.

e. Demonstrates knowledge of procedures and physician preferences when instructing patients.

f. Documents and communicates any specific patient concerns or problems ex. Hearing loss in left ear.

g. Chooses appropriate site for IV insertion, and starts IV with no more than two sticks.

h. Clearly and accurately documents nursing care activities and patient history.

i. May act as a witness for informed consent.

j. Disinfects work area and cleans equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.

B. Recovery Room Role

a. Follows standing recovery room orders

b. Accurately documents post procedure progress in recovery room

c. Checks and follow through on any additional physician orders

d. Keeps patient until discharge criteria met

e. Can move the patient through the recovery process efficiently, while adjusting their care depending on their vital signs and post procedure symptoms.

f. Arranges or instructs patient on obtaining follow up appointments

g. Makes follow up calls to patient on next working day following procedure.

h. Reviews discharge instructions and provides patient education as needed.

i. Knows emergency protocol

j. Demonstrates and uses knowledge of safety measures.

k. Disinfects work area and cleans equipment according to manufacturer recommendations.

l. Able to identify arrhythmias and inform appropriate anesthesia personnel.

C. Miscellaneous Duties

a. Narcotic counts

b. Stocking of specific work area

c. Emergency cart inspection and equipment checks

d. When directed, can initiate the “911” call, and gives information according to policy.

e. Performs additional duties as directed.

f. Attends all staff meetings and in-service classes on regularly scheduled days.

g. Complies with the various incident reporting systems of the Center, e.g. Adverse

Incident.

h. Completes initial and annual employee education training/ Healthstream

JOB QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

• Current PA State License
• Prefer previous experience in an admitting, procedure or recovery role in an ambulatory seting, preferably a GI setting.
• Must be ACLS certified within 3 months of employment and provide proof of certification.
• Must be BLS certified within 3 months of employment and provide proof of certification.
• Demonstrated IV skills or willingness to attend IV training.
• Pre-employment physical with additional testing as required by state and OSHA requirements .

JOB RELATIONSHIPS

• Reports directly to the Nurse Manager.
• Works cooperatively with Endoscopy Center co-workers, the staff of Physicians utilizing the

Endoscopy Center.

• Presents a friendly, courteous, and helpful manner in all interactions with patients and other offices.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS

• Possesses good physical health, capable of working in a demanding environment.
• Able to perform the basic functions of the job including extended hours, standing, bending, and stretching with frequent trips to all areas of the Center.
• Able to lift, and carry supplies and equipment as needed.
• Possesses manual dexterity, hearing acuity, and visual acuity, which are important to the performance of the job tasks.
• Speaks clearly and distinctly to perform extensive communication with other staff members, patients, and their families/escorts, physicians, vendors and other third parties.
• Appears professional at all times.
• Wears minimal jewelry which will not interfere with clinical responsibilities.
• Wears scrub attire for clinical duties, which will only be worn within the facility.

*** Background Check Requirement ***

As a condition of employment, a complete background investigation will be conducted based on the rules of the specific State in which the employee is hired. Typically, the state investigative process includes a state and federal background check. In addition, a drug screen will be required. TB testing will also be required for all patient-facing roles.
