Job Class: Hourly/Non-Exempt; Full-time $22.50 - $25/hour DOE

Summary:
This is a full-time position in a laboratory devoted to the development and implementation of novel radioligands for use in positron emission tomography (PET) imaging studies supporting central nervous system (CNS) drug development and investigations of the neurobiology of brain diseases. The laboratory operates within the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System s Northwest Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (NW MIRECC), whose mission is to contribute to better treatment of the unseen wounds of war (PTSD, mild traumatic brain injury, and their comorbidities).
Job Description:
The Research Assistant will be responsible for laboratory organization and management under the direction and supervision of senior laboratory members and be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the research lab. The Research Assistant will also assist with preparation and carrying out in vitro and animal experiments under the direction of the investigators.
This position is currently supported for 1 year and may be extended contingent on project funding availability and/or collaborative effort provided to other projects. The position provides $22.50 - $25/hr commensurate with training and experience, in addition to medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurances, transportation benefit, and access to a retirement saving program with matching. A flexible schedule within a 40h work week on average can be arranged. Co-authorship on peer reviewed publications is available contingent on degree of project participation and contribution.

Responsibilities:
- General laboratory maintenance (access control, organization, cleaning)
- Order supplies & equipment
- Perform general laboratory maintenance in accordance with VA Research and Development (R&D) service Lab Safety & Chemical Hygiene Plan, Biosafety Guidelines, and Radiation Safety guidelines.
- Maintain records of chemical and supplies orders, deliveries, and storage locations.
- Maintain records in accordance with VA Information Security and Privacy Guidelines
- Maintain radioactivity disposal logs (primarily tritium)
- Perform and record results of laboratory radioactivity surveys.
- Maintain chemical waste inventories and dispose of wastes according to VA R&D guidelines.
- Interface with VA R&D Safety, Biosafety, and Radiation Safety Officers to ensure compliance with guidelines and prepare for inspections,
- Help organize and track study samples
- Record and archive paper and electronic data
- Independently prepare experimental supplies and equipment as directed
- Prepare solutions and buffers
- Section brain tissue on cryostat (training provided)
- Operate scientific instruments with training and/or supervision (e.g., centrifuge, liquid scintillation counter)
- Process harvested brain and organ tissues from rodents (rats & mice) under supervision
- Work with animal and human specimens of blood and tissues under supervision
- Work with trace levels of radioactively labeled compounds and specimens under supervision
- Other duties as assigned
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor s degree in a field of biological or physical sciences with at least 1 year of research experience separate from academic coursework or lab courses
- Strong organizational skills
- Strong writing and verbal communication skills
- Able to keep detailed notes of experiments
- Proficiency in algebra
- Willing to learn new techniques
- Willing to work with radioactivity
- Willing to assist with animal experimental protocols
- Preference will be given to candidates who have extensive experience with:
- Working with laboratory animals
- Sectioning tissue with cryostat or vibratome
- Identifying neuroanatomical structures
- Developing photographic film
- Performing protein assays
- Performing commonly used histological staining techniques (e.g., H&E)
- Chemistry and particularly organic chemistry
- Familiarity with general office software (e.g., MS Office), retrieving scientific literature (e.g., PubMed, Web of Science)
- Able to work with members of a scientific team
- Organize and present data at research team meetings
- Curiosity in neuroscience or drug development
