Position overview:

The Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource has an opening for a Research Associate to help support the development of multimodal optical and X-ray biological imaging. This position would have a component (roughly 50%) that focuses on modifying the transmission X-ray microscope to accommodate the hybrid microscope system and supporting the X-ray beamtime associated with this effort. The second part (remaining approximately 50%) will involve synchrotron related characterization of electrochemical energy storage systems. Both aspects will involve some development of in situ/vivo sample design for X-ray microscopy and will include the establishment of new SSRL users and development of new collaborations.

Note: The Research Associate role is a fixed term staff position. Appointment duration is 24 months, with the possibility of extension. Assignment duration is contingent upon project needs and funding.

SLAC is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory operated by Stanford University and based in Menlo Park, CA. Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

Applicants must provide evidence of either a recently completed PhD degree or confirmation of completion of the PhD degree requirements prior to starting the position. Applicants should also include a cover letter, a statement of research area including brief summary of accomplishments, a curriculum vitae, a list of publications, and names of three references for future letters of recommendation with the application.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • PhD in physics, materials sciences, chemistry biology, or related field, and demonstrated research experience in synchrotron-based X-ray science.
  • Experience with synchrotron X-ray microscopy and/or imaging
  • Some experience with electrochemistry is desirable, but not essential
  • Strong experimental, analytical and computation skills
  • Broad scientific interests
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population; good interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
